ToddH on Q3A

Related Topics – id software, Quake 3 Arena

GameFan has a Q&A with Todd Hollenshead of id Software following the release of Quake3 talking about all of the common issues that have come up. Todd states there has not been a single verified piracy problem with the CD keys yet, talks about voodoo3 performance, and also dodges a question about a Quake3 point release including new maps  pretty well. If you're having key problems, make sure and check out the previous news items on keys here, here, and here.

  • I can\'t believe that Todd would try to pass off the bots as perfect. What a load of PR crap. Shame.

Since when do people stop to chat in a fight, and they love to jump to their deaths consistantly in the same spot.....yet they never ever miss a shot. The bots are OK.

I would like to see a level pack with the next patch, but this is isn\'t really a bug...it\'s just something that I think would good of them to do.

What I do consider a bug is that my mouse wheel doesn\'t work! WTF. After months and months of testing a mousewheel doesn\'t work. ouch.

  • No offense Apache, but your review as problems.

One minute you\'re pining over the style of Q2, then you make a comment that you didn\'t like Q2 overall?

The velocity of the rockets is somewhat lacking, and the damage created isnÂ’t that great, but it splashes a lot, and is easy to hit people with. Still--I enjoyed the version in Quake II more than this newer one

Hmm... the rocket velocity and power is lacking, but you liked the even slower Q2 one more??

Oh, and \"the nail gun from Q2 returns (though I prefer the Q2 version)\"?

Uh huh. I think the word you were after was \"rail gun\"

  • #24, He\'s talking about cracked servers that don\'t talk to authorize.idsoftware.com and thus allow retail and warez\'d clients to join.
Here\'s some tcpdump connection flow info that will clear things up.

    0) client registers its plaintext key with auth on port 27952 (dont think about it. this is a fake key)

    ....getKeyAuthor ff ff ff ff 67 65 74 4b 65 79 41 75 74 68 6f 72
    ize 999 58jhd729 69 7a 65 20 39 39 39 20 35 38 6a 68 64 37 32 39
    4728a9df 34 37 32 38 61 39 64 66

    1) client asks to connect to server

    ....getchallenge ff ff ff ff 67 65 74 63 68 61 6c 6c 65 6e 67 65

    2) server asks auth (port 27952) if this client is authorized.

    ....getIpAuthori ff ff ff ff 67 65 74 49 70 41 75 74 68 6f 72 69
    ze 982960029 24. 7a 65 20 39 38 32 39 36 30 30 32 39 20 32 34 2e
    129.26.67 31 32 39 2e 32 36 2e 36 37

(a hacked server won\'t contact auth, or will contact a localhost fake)

    3) auth responds to server with accept or deny

    ....ipAuthorize ff ff ff ff 69 70 41 75 74 68 6f 72 69 7a 65 20
    982960029 accept 39 38 32 39 36 30 30 32 39 20 61 63 63 65 70 74

    4) if accepted server lets the client know

    ....challengeRes ff ff ff ff 63 68 61 6c 6c 65 6e 67 65 52 65 73
    ponse 982960029 70 6f 6e 73 65 20 39 38 32 39 36 30 30 32 39

(a hacked server will always respond allowing a connection)

    5) client can now connect and start frag\'n

    Yes, I bought the game.
