WON Shutdown Soon

24

We received an email from Valve, announcing that WON authentication servers will be shut down soon. After this operation is done (should be by July 31), you can no longer use of the online features of non-Steam Valve products, such as Counter-Strike 1.5. People who haven't already done so are encouraged to download Steam so they can continue to play.

Not a fan of Steam. I don't like having to load an extra client. Even for single player, wtf? I don't care if it only takes up 500k of memory (I'm sure it doesn't), it just seems like a waste of effort.

I'm glad id isn't going this way.

By the way, what if every game company started doing this? Would you really want 5 different clients like Steam?

if every game company started doing this, I'd grow up a hell of a lot faster. I haven't even used Steam, but between the personal details disclosed, the lack of a physical medium containing a game installer, and the rampant problems with downtime and mysterious huge Steam cache files being surreptitiously downloaded, I'm not buying it.

I'm with you guys. Steam is a scary bitch, there needs to be some open alternative to it before every publisher gets away with putting more crap on your system so they can push shit to you. I'm not putting steam on my computer, I'll wait for the Xbox version.
