Late Night Consoling

by Alec Matias, Jul 14, 2004 8:00pm PDT

Here's hoping that the rumors coming out of Japan regarding the Nintendo DS means we're getting close to actually hearing some official about the device. I mentioned a couple weeks ago that it's a bit odd that we're in the middle of summer and we have yet to know all, or least close to all, of the details about the portable system that should be available prior to the Thanksgiving holiday. Although I had hoped for more than five or six games at launch, most, if not all, should be Nintendo titles worth monetary consideration. $180, however, won't help it much in the beginning, especially with all three consoles available for less. But lets not speculate too much at this juncture, something official should be coming down from Nintendo shortly.

NDS Nintendo DS Release Date and Price? The big rumor going around this evening stems from an article found at gamesindustry.biz. Citing unconfirmed sources out of Japan, the Nintendo DS will hit the Japanese market on November 4th and a week later (11/11) in the US. The unit will retail here for $180 and will launch with either five or six titles and have eleven available by Christmas. No other details were included, such as the DS' final name or which titles it would have at launch.

  • Played Karaoke Revolution 2 for about 3 hours last night. Nothing much different from KR1 aside from the song list and two new play modes (which, in and of themselves, aren't really at all interesting).

The song list definitely has a much wider appeal this time, covering modern rock, country, soul, disco, and even throwing in a Cole Porter tune (unlockable).

Scoring in KR2 also seems a lot more forgiving. After having not played KR for a while, I picked up my mic, tried one of the new songs, and somehow got a 100% perfect in Easy mode. First time that has ever happened. I then got 100% in two other songs. Looks like they lowered the barrier of entry by quite a bit in order to encourage suck-ass singers like myself.

Still waiting for that new Logitech microphone to come out, though. I think that will add another dimension to the game. Speaking of mics, they put some reverb on the playback through the PS2 so your voice coming out of the speakers sounds a little more like you're giving a concert. It's a nice touch. It prompted me to yell out, "Thank you, Cleveland!" at one point.

    Though I'm not in Cleveland.

I'm not sure why I said Cleveland.

    It's not important.
