More Q3A Keys
by Steve Gibson, Dec 06, 1999 8:35am PSTA lot of people have been emailing me of all people telling me their Quake3 CD key isnt working. Just a small reminder for you guys, I didnt make Quake3. Todd Hollenshead has a reminder .plan update for you folks having problems which I've found to be true. Double check your damn cdkey! Then check it again! Also, for those of you who keep emailing me in Quake3 secrets, check out this list and this list. Oh yeah, interesting stat of the day. Graeme tells me that for every legit key check sent to the master, 2 people are trying to hack a key. Cool eh?

Yah, just kiddin\'.. Uh..
Well, you can be sure that things will be quite different in Q4 as far as the cd-key crap goes, specifically being able to view it so easily..
As for people not being able to type it in properly, LMAO.. So what if it says it\'s in use, can you not type a fuckin\' simple thing into your computer..? Duh.. Maybe ID should put a warnin\' label on their products:
\"If you can\'t type in the cd key as it\'s written, go get a BFG and shoot yourself, moron..\"
Anyway, I was referring to the plan update saying to make sure your key is in lowercase. Obviously id is doing something incorrectly if all of their support mail is incorrectly entered cd keys. Everyone who mis-typed a cdkey got \"Your CD Key is already in use\", not everyone who enters it in wrong reads his plan file. Whatever, I don\'t give a shit, I am playing the game. I am jsut saying Todd there should stop his crying if he\'s getting bombarded with tech support mail when they are giving people that error message.
\"id also knows that there will be hackers out there that will crack this no matter what, even if that means hacking the authentication server itself.\"
There are only 2 ways I can see to beat it:
1) Somebody at id/Activision leaks the keygen.
2) Hackers run servers that don\'t check auth with id. Problem with that is, warez copies will only be able to play on a small percentage of total servers. Also, if id finds a way to stop people from doing this easily (by changing .hosts), then the hackers will have to rehack the server every time there\'s a new release.
\"So I expect this whole thing to disappear with a point release (it\'s definitely a way to get more people to buy the game, especially at this time of year.)\"
What does \"especially at this time of year\" supposed to mean? You think that if the key check is removed, hackers will suddenly go out and buy the game of good faith? Give me a break. The only people complaining are the cheap asses. For the rest of us, its as simple as one small extra step upon installation, then never worrying about it again. I can\'t see id EVER removing the key. 2 fake attempts per real key! What a riot. Pure justification.
Wow you have no clue:
The Q2 cd check (which is not a cd key by any stretch of the imagination) was removed because they didnt want to rewrite it to handle the Quake2 addon packs from Xatrix and Rogue, but because they felt like they had served their purpose and it was time to remove them.
Also, Quake3 doesnt PLAY cd audio. It plays wav files that\'re IN the pak file. If you did full install, its not playing anything from the cd. If you did partial install, you\'ll need the cd in the drive no matter what id does.
What id could do is remove the physical cd check for single player. That\'s there to stop casual warezing amongst friends that don\'t have cd burners.
I hope they\'ll change that in a future release
Free q3
Will the authorization server of id be able to see which one is legal and which is not ?
Or is this situation impossible ? I just thought if the cd key is a number (q3 isn\'t available yet here so i don\'t know) ... there will be a generator for it ...

I\'m not questioning id\'s choice of a unique error message, I\'m quesitoning their choice of message. If login returned \"Account Already in Use\" everytime someone incorrectly typed their passwd, sysadmins would be getting alot more redundant mail.
For instance, say your randomly generating keys. Say the id server gave two replies, \"key in use\" and \"invalid key\". It would be pretty easy to distinguish between a valid key and an invalid one, yes?
Now, just have one message \"invalid key\", or in id\'s case \"CD key in use\". The problem becomes much more difficult.
FYI, this is why all UNIXes always say \"Login incorrect\" instead of something like \"bad password\", to slow down brute force password crackers
Seriously, \"Your CD Key is already in use\" being a generic error message?
CD Key is written on back in uppercase, yet you have to enter it in lowercase, and if you type it in wrong, it tells you the key is already in use. Go id! No wonder they get spammed with mail about problems.
Btw, I just shit my pants.
Oh an for all you fella\'s tellin me to buy it an everything....yeah when they get it friggin stores here I will
:)
By the way people, I am collecting scans of the back of the Quake 3 Arena CD Cases... I just want a collection of pictures of the cases, preferably signed by the owner! Send them to me at dnleong@sfu.ca, and I will post them at http://members.xoom.com/sinnedsrealm.
