Late Night Consoling
by Alec Matias, Jun 30, 2004 8:00pm PDTSo not only has the database server been causing all sorts of probs, but my home land line died in a recent thunderstorm, so I've been doing LNC at a buddy's house over dial-up. Loading IGN over dial-up is NOT pretty, so you better appreciate my effort, damnit! Also, check out the comments for a backlog of rumors from this week. Lets see if that section takes off.
| | Teen Experiences Heart Attack playing DDR While Dance Dance Revolution is garnering mainstream press coverage for the weight loss and health fad teenagers everywhere are experiencing, the mood turned sour when a teen from Nebraska had a heart attack while playing the game. Kimber Wilson, 15, suddenly collapsed as she played in a Omaha arcade. Paramedics arrived and used a defibrillator to revive her. However, before all you mothers out there start blaming video games for killing our youth, it was discovered that Kimber had a pre-existing heart condition that caused the attack and she was later fitted with a pacemaker. |
| | Nintendo Europe's Managing Director Steps Down David Gosen, the managing director of Nintendo, announced today that he will be officially stepping down from his position on August 31st, putting an end to a five year career with the gaming giant. From Nintendo, he will become the COO of mobile game publisher Digital Brigades. Recently, Gosen gave a vitriolic speech against Microsoft that made headlines everywhere. Gosen also stood over the European launches of three platforms; the GBA, the GBA SP, and GameCube. |
| | PSP Delayed; PSP NOT Delayed Earlier this day, the Internet was ablaze with speculation concerning one analyst's report on the likelihood of Sony's PSP handheld making it in time for a March 2005 release. In his report, game-industry analyst PJ McNealy claims a lack of PSP SDK kits and an internal Sony memo citing technological problems as reasons why the US and Europe won't see the PSP before the end of Sony's fiscal year. Later in the day, however, Sony refuted the claim, saying they're still on track with their deadline and things are progressing nicely. |

Golden Sun on the GameCube
A couple sites have made mention of this but lack to cite a source. Anyway, word out of Japan is that we'll hear shortly from Nintendo regarding a GameCube version of Golden Sun. The site TotalVideoGames.com has also rumored that there will be a multiplayer option. Camelot will be developing the title. Lets hope it doesn't require any GBA hook-ups.

No MP3 Playback on PSP
GameSpot's weekly rumor control column details that in a recent interview in European Edge magazine, Phil Harrison, SCEE's VP of development, drops the bombshell that there will be no MP3 playback on the PSP. Not much else there about the rumor; guess we have to wait for the magazine to hit stands to confirm its veracity.

GameCube and Revolution Backwards Compatible?
This is one rumor amongst a few in the latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly. On top of the next-gen Nintendo system playing GCN games, Quartermann forsees a profitable future for Xbox2 with a Dead or Alive 4 and Epic's unrevealed game both hitting the Xbox's successor. Also Silicon Knights and SEGA are teaming up for an Xbox release. Finally, BioWare is hard at work on another console RPG with a sci-fi theme. He didn't allude to it being another KOTOR, but what I would give for a Star Wars RPG as an Xbox2 launch title.
Geist Delayed?
GamerFeed says in the upcoming issue of a Euro GameCube magazine, they confirm that Geist, a premier GCN title will slip till 2005. They were sparse on the details, so I'll wait for something more official.

It seems publishers and developers are finally listening to gamers lamenting "No, I'm sorry, your movie-to-game conversion does suck"
Riddick, Spiderman 2, KOTOR, all pretty nice games.
Good work! It only took 15 years to realise movie->game conversions need more than just a name on the box and a crappy DOS16 game built with MesaGL inside!
