Quake3 Next Week

by Steve Gibson, Nov 29, 1999 5:20pm PST
Related Topics – Activision, E3, Quake 3 Arena

Well, it looks like the speculation of that December 12th release date for Quake3 being incorrect seem to be well founded. Disruptor made a post to the Quake3 messageboard with this bit of info:

It's not out in stores yet. To my understanding, Activision is wanting to do a simultaneous release in North America and overseas. Looks like next week sometime if all goes well.
Of course keep in mind the 'if all goes well' statement, so dont count on it just yet. If all went well all the time every game would be released on time or early and you would have won the lottery.

On the bright side... I will get an English manual as opposed to a POS Dutch translation by someone who doesn´t know the first thing about the game.

I´ve been bitching for a long time about the fact that publishers don´t (or rarely) do worldwide releases, and this probably serves me right.

Doing a worldwide release probably will mean more money for Activision as I know lots of people who had full intention of buying a game and then have to wait for 3 weeks or more while a warez version is available and the game is still not in the stores overhere.
When it finally does come out it has a manual with a crappy translation and they will probably have finished the warez version by then and just forget about buying the game altogether.

Is this right? No. I believe in buying my games, and I do. Although I´m a bit squeamish about buying anything from M$ that´s not a mouse or a keyboard ^_^

The reason that worldwide releases are starting to become nescesary is the internet. Companies advertise games, movies and other products on websites to the whole world. Half a year ago there was StarWars all over the web and people were seeing the movie. At the same time you know you´re going to have to wait for 4 months before the friggin´ thing comes to the theatres overhere. How cool is that?
A game is released (you´ve been following and anticipating it for over a year on the web) and people are posting rave reviews on the web. The biggest game retailer in YOUR country doesn´t even have a tentative ETA. It´s not a surprise a lot of people resort to warez in these cases. (even though it´s not a valid excuse).

As for the \'try before you buy\' argument with regards to warez... I don´t mind that too much I think. I mean I bought Tiberian Sun and played it for a whopping 2 hours maybe. Damn that sucked. But if you take that approach, be honest and buy the game if you like it. Warez the game when you´re waiting for your pre-order to arrive? Gee, I dunno. I might do that, but I´d like to think I can rely on other things to keep me entertained too. If I can survive waiting 4 months for StarWars then why not this.
The thing that counts in the end is probably your intention. Sometimes I get into a conversation with other gamers and I tell them I bought this or that game and they give you a look that kind of says \'You can actually buy games?\' And some of these people actually have jobs that pay a decent salary. That kind of shit really boggles me. They play this game every night and simply WON´T pay for it.

As for the I´m poor argument #306. You can afford a system that runs Q3, but can´t afford the game? \'I have the hook upz (jealousy eh?) \' Sheesh, any imbecile can get the hook-ups if he spent some time on it.
\'I r00l j00 anti-warez p00nx.\' I really like it when I don´t have to make a fool out of someone, because they are so good at doing that to themselves.

Heh, this turned into quite a little rant. Oh well, just my 2 legal copies.

  • Well, for one, I wouldn\'t get a game I didn\'t try out or read enough reviews on. If the manufacturer doesn\'t want to promote the game, and no one you know has the game for you to try, how can it be worth it? There are a few rarities, but many games are shitty to begin with.

I can\'t recall who said it, but someone said 90% of all books in a bookstore are not worth toilet paper. I suppose the same could be true about anything.

For me, though, I do admit to downloading warez of utlities which are crippled to see whether the full version has any benefits, and buy it or delete it. But games, I just don\'t see the benefit. If I can\'t get the feel from the demo, and no one I know owns it, then I don\'t take the risk.

I\'m undecided on things like Adobe Photoshop #D Max, etc... I know a couple of people who got those because they\'re students and want to learn how to use them and aren\'t winning to pay the ludicrous price for them. So if one person gets it for his own simple use, I\'m ok with it. If they actually went and did something commerical with it, bust their ass.

The availability issue is the person\'s own damned fault. If a game isn\'t released early enough in your country, is that the game manufacturer\'s fault or yours? They can\'t release it to every single country on the same day. Got a problem with it, move or stop bitching.

Nope, sorry. Its the companies own damn fault if they can\'t release it everywhere similtaneously. If they don\'t wan\'t people to warez it for that reason, they can stop bitching about pirates and release it everywhere similtaneously.

And since when hasn\'t id given anyone a decent enough Demo. The full demo\'s not out, but if I recall, neither is the real game!

Quake\'s demo gave you 1/4th the game up front for free. Plus if you registered the shareware CD, you got a bunch of extra id stuff with it. That\'s a fairly cool offer. I didn\'t use the Q2 demo, so I couldn\'t tell you what it had. I went out and bought the full version instead.

Quake 1 had a great demo. I never at any stage had a warez version of Quake 1. I didn\'t try Q2 at and and just bought it. I got burned there. No copy of Q2 is in my household.

The Quake games weren\'t ones I was using for the demo example though. I downloaded a warez version of C&C: Tiberium Sun, it doesn\'t have a demo. Thank goodness I did. That game sucked. That warez copy went promptly to the recycle bin.

To be blunt, theres nothing you caould say to convince me my warezing is bad.

But I am realistic. People who warez \'honestly\' (as in buy the game afterwards) are most probably a pretty small percentage of people who download warez for the hell of it and could care less about the makers.

It\'s not ignorant. Those seem to be very valid points.

Money should never be an issue to warez. The price is set for those who use it. People bitch about the price of things like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and PageMaker, about NT Server, about 3D Studio Max, without realizing that these programs are tailored toward professionals, not the simpleton working at home wanting to do simple image works. There are programs for these that are within everyone\'s price ranges. Same with games. Games are made for those who don\'t earn $500,000 a year or work for a business.

The availability issue is the person\'s own damned fault. If a game isn\'t released early enough in your country, is that the game manufacturer\'s fault or yours? They can\'t release it to every single country on the same day. Got a problem with it, move or stop bitching.

And since when hasn\'t id given anyone a decent enough Demo. The full demo\'s not out, but if I recall, neither is the real game!

  • Clear the decks!

Clear panes of thought streak dark as dusk falls. Will I
understand that single central mystery of the universe tonight? (Hey, even
right thinking individuals tend to turn thoughts loose when daylight fades)
Silent reflection is never the answer; but neither is conversation - to
evict the omnipotent, translucent question mark, I have but to sum
dim memories of nightmares with clear truths. Scientific process it ainÂ’t, but on
whichever thoughts I base my perceptions, I sense something still amiss. ItÂ’s like I
intend to confuse myself. Well, okay, maybe not consciously, but somethingÂ’s wanting a
twisted conclusion. It might be the brain itself, I think. Discard that. Circular logic
has never gotten you anywhere before. Besides, others are better at it. Hmm.
The easy answer is that life is simply a vacuum: filled with nonsubstance that I
have to believe in. (Yeah, me along with everybody else) (Almost everybody) Screw people. Burn
‘em all at the stake, I say. And duality is for mental giants. I feel like I really ought to be tired.

I\'m done now. Promise. Night all.

  • no dude. i\'m far from fucking correct obviously, shit. Nice analogy. I respect that. I know What a frag is. I shoulda said \" you act like a fucking serial Clown\" Using the word Kill today is like commiting the act itself. I was in a school shooting. Wha! wha! i\'m not crying. I feel sorry for it. It never should have happend. Kip kinkle makes it hard on every one to have free speach. as you said kill 7 times in an irrelevant Left field comment. I though you were a fucking whacked out crack head, whoes parents molest your tiny testicles and keep you locked in your room, while every one makes fun of you @ school. But obviously i was wrong. and i\'m sorry ANONYMOUSBLAHLBAHLBHA.com seriously.

  • Err, hmm. I keep forgetting sometimes that comments I make off-the-cuff in the forums usually end up making the front page =\\ Anyway, the \"next week\" comment was just a guess on my part that has no basis in any fact whatsoever. I\'m sure Activision is doing whatever they can to get the game out ASAP. I\'m sure once Activision provides us an ETA, Todd will make an update in his .plan, but for now, count on December 12th. If it\'s out sooner, great.

I made that post on the forums to debunk that dude who was messing with y\'all by saying it was in stores. I know all of you reading this want a nice shiney metallic Q3A box in your hands ASAP, and so do I, believe me =)

  • I\'m on a 56k and I download every single fucking game/ISO I want...why?

    1. I\'m poor.
    2. I live in a tiny town.
    3. I have the hook upz (jealousy eh?)
    4. I r00l j00 anti-warez p00nx.
    5. Jail? I\'m going to jail because I got warez? Eh, I know 40 gig FTP sites with all the warez from like 4 months ago.
    6. Its faster, lets see most rips are like 80-100 megs. Hmm, on a 56k thats about a 6 hour download, better than ordering from some gimp ass ordering company who might steal my CC (Remember i\'m poor though!)
    7. I don\'t get food stamps for games (I\'m poor...we remember.)
    8. Faster, easier, cheaper, funner.
    9. Want a list? Too bad.
    10. EH, I just want 10. Eh...because :W: rules?

    Yeah!

    *sigh*

    The first ignorant anti-warez comments.

The Cost? id makes too much already? Good, obviously if they\'ve made a product that you like so much that you\'d pirate it, they deserve that money. At $50 a game, how can you NOT afford it? Ask your mommies if you don\'t have the money.

Moneys not an issue. I\'m buying it anyway. (Put an order with my local shop days ago)

The Availability? It\'s available in North America usually first. If you don\'t live there, stop bitching and move.

You tell me why thats not an acceptable reason.

I\'ve done it for that reason for numerous games, and will continue to do so.

I can\'t think of any other reasons pirates give for pirating games.

Another one is to have a proper demonstration of the games. There are games which don\'t put demos out and even for ones that do, the full game is a better indicator. (I can\'t see a full offical Q3 demo around anywhere.. can you?)

Oh, theres are other reasons why people do it. Theres the \"because they can\" type. The people who think its cool. The people who get warez to sell it and make money for themselves. THEY, are the scum.
