Broussard on Duke4

by Steve Gibson, Nov 21, 1999 2:20am PST

George Broussard of 3DRealms is being frisky again and answered several questions on Duke4Ever on the interview item Maarten posted yesterday. I grabbed George's take on multiplayer for Duke4 since I figured that interests you guys the most. Check the thread for his other comments. (There are a few)

Duke 3D was one of the best DM games ever (especially for it's time). We certainly think we can compete well with id/Epic in that "Arena" ;) MultiPlay is a very, very high priority for us because we 1) love to play and 2) know that multiplay extends a games life for 2 years or more. We will NOT just throw together some generic multiplayer and ship it like many others have done. You can bet that DNF MultiPlay will be on par with anything else out there. Single play sells the initial game, but multiplay keeps it going and going and going ;) DNF is also our 4th multiplayer FPS title, so we're pretty comfortable with making that style of game and balancing weapons and understanding what most of you want in the experience. • hey, I think you 3DR guys are alright. you produced a great product and all this talk of duke-4-ever has got me playing duke3d again with my dad, brother, and uncle online again. ( kali of course ) you know whats funny....if you were to just upgrade the graphics I would be happy...well that and being able to look all the way up and all the way down.

Duke3d was actually the first game that got me into to maps I did one of home shopping network where I use to work, It had the monitors, cameras, stages, the cubicles for the phone center....god that was a good map. anyway just wanted to let you guys know that Duke4ever is one of 3 that I will be eagerly awaiting next year. TF2, and Halo are the other ones....with the different styles of play I will be buying all three no matter what.

  • Im very skeptical about DukeForever. As seen below in George Broussard\'s post, even after 4 years, they still havent got over the success of one game. If a company points to a game released 4 years ago as proof of their ability, im not one to buy those claims. How much of the Duke3d team is working on DukeForever, anyway ? I couldnt imagine ID working on Quake3 for 4 years and pointing to Doom continously as the reason why everyone should be excited. Quake came after Duke3d right ? Since then, we\'ve had Quake2 and very soon Quake3. And 3drealms still seems to be stuck up on how much they sold Duke3d.

\"And don\'t babble curved surfaces, because we all know that hard core players turn all that stuff off anyway\"

That has to be one of the lamest statements i\'ve ever heard. Erm, most hardcore gamers play at minimum texture resolution, and 16bit color depth. Why are you using the Unreal engine anyways ?

  • DukeMatch is a lot of fun. Up until the beginning of this year we played DM during lunch at our company on Duke3D.

It was only after some turn-over that the majority of the office didn\'t have the maps memorized that we switched over to Quake2 to make it more fair.

I still think the interactivity of the Duke levels is far superior to anything that has been done since. I can\'t wait for a new version of the game done with state-of-the-art graphics.

Duke3D was the last FPS I actually spent the time to finish playing in single-player. I\'ll bet I\'ll be doing the same thing agin with the new one. I\'ll be happy to wait \"until it is done\" if there is a technology test/demo available to us... <g>

I can\'t wait to see the kind of creativity and quality of level design that was in Duke3D in a decent engine with cutting edge graphics.

  • Great idea Escapee. Especially in DNF where you donÂ’t see your character since youÂ’re playing in first person perspective. ItÂ’d be so cool to have slow-motion replays in third person perspective. LetÂ’s say you just got killed and you get instant replay in third person perspective of how it happened, or you just did a cool move of dodging bullets, or you just gunned down five monsters in 2 second without even a scratch. That would be so fucking cool. 3D Realms Please! (I know you have it in Max Payne kind of anyway. If itÂ’s not too much of a hassle could you please include something like that in DNF)

  • Since Dukeboys are reading this page, let me give you just ONE word of advice. RELEASE THE PIECE OF SHIT ALREADY! Actually that\'s six words but you get the point. Jesus Harold Christ guys, you talk the talk but never produce (Prey, DNF). I mean, peeing in the toilet and checking yourself in the mirror was funny FOUR YEARS AGO! Fook, we didnt even have Pentiums then. Hop to you Daikatana-like waste of bandwidths.
I am in idfanboy but I can tell you this, I will personally suck off each and everyone at 3DRealms if this thing is half as good as Quake3 or UT. It\'s beginning to smell like SiN to me.
However, I may be completely full of shit, so wtf do i know.
    Phil

  • Since Wolfenstein, the only single-player fps that I\'ve actually spent the time to complete was Duke3D. In my opinion, no other FPS before or since had/has the character and originality that Duke had. Yes, Quake had better graphics, better gameplay, etc... but Duke Nukem was the man. The story was great, the maps were great, and interacting with the environment (like the strippers and the toilets) was just awesome.

I\'m REALLY looking forward to Duke4Ever, but that interview from Broussard made me a bit disappointed. I really thought they were a lot farther along than he indicated. He said that only half the weapons are in, and most enemies aren\'t in yet, either. I expected a March release (or so) but I doubt it now. Oh well, I think it will definitely be worth the wait.

  • I think the same thing that happened to Duke3D will happen to DNF. When the demo and subsequently the full game came out in the first half of 96, I used to play it a lot.

It was good deathmatch, not as great as he makes it out to be though. The very moment Quake came out, Duke3D was dead as far as multiplayer goes (and at that point it was dead single player). When it was released, Duke3D was relatively advanced technology wise, and the interactivity was nice.

Now, I think by the time it gets released, it won\'t be advanced technology wise, and it won\'t be able to come close to the multiplayer of Q3 and probably even UT. By the time DNF comes out, there will be good mods for Q3, and maybe even UT.
