Broussard on Duke4
by Steve Gibson, Nov 21, 1999 2:20am PSTGeorge Broussard of 3DRealms is being frisky again and answered several questions on Duke4Ever on the interview item Maarten posted yesterday. I grabbed George's take on multiplayer for Duke4 since I figured that interests you guys the most. Check the thread for his other comments. (There are a few)
Duke 3D was one of the best DM games ever (especially for it's time). We certainly think we can compete well with id/Epic in that "Arena" ;) MultiPlay is a very, very high priority for us because we 1) love to play and 2) know that multiplay extends a games life for 2 years or more. We will NOT just throw together some generic multiplayer and ship it like many others have done. You can bet that DNF MultiPlay will be on par with anything else out there. Single play sells the initial game, but multiplay keeps it going and going and going ;) DNF is also our 4th multiplayer FPS title, so we're pretty comfortable with making that style of game and balancing weapons and understanding what most of you want in the experience. We shall see, I hope you prove me wrong.

BAH.
Duke3d was actually the first game that got me into to maps I did one of home shopping network where I use to work, It had the monitors, cameras, stages, the cubicles for the phone center....god that was a good map. anyway just wanted to let you guys know that Duke4ever is one of 3 that I will be eagerly awaiting next year. TF2, and Halo are the other ones....with the different styles of play I will be buying all three no matter what.
\"And don\'t babble curved surfaces, because we all know that hard core players turn all that stuff off anyway\"
That has to be one of the lamest statements i\'ve ever heard. Erm, most hardcore gamers play at minimum texture resolution, and 16bit color depth. Why are you using the Unreal engine anyways ?
Couldn\'t you give all of your millions of fans
who bought your game a playable netgame like
Dukeworld??
This is actually a valid question. The rest of your tirade was pathetic and juvenile.
It was only after some turn-over that the majority of the office didn\'t have the maps memorized that we switched over to Quake2 to make it more fair.
I still think the interactivity of the Duke levels is far superior to anything that has been done since. I can\'t wait for a new version of the game done with state-of-the-art graphics.
Duke3D was the last FPS I actually spent the time to finish playing in single-player. I\'ll bet I\'ll be doing the same thing agin with the new one. I\'ll be happy to wait \"until it is done\" if there is a technology test/demo available to us... <g>
I can\'t wait to see the kind of creativity and quality of level design that was in Duke3D in a decent engine with cutting edge graphics.
Finish the damn game already. OH? why not just wait till Epic releases there next game and then you can update DNF to the new codebase. But I\'m sure we will all be happy just looking at screen shots for the next few years on Scary\'s
...
hehe
macphisto right. What\'s wrong dude? Did you get laid or something?
Speaking of getting laid, IÂ’m sick and tired of jerking off here all alone and IÂ’d like to share this wonderful experience with my comrades ShackÂ’s readers. Babe Hunt Please! IÂ’ve got lots of material piled up here that desperately needs to be put in use.
In defense of the 3 people left playing SiN regularly, it was a damn good game! Ok, enuff from me =)

I am in idfanboy but I can tell you this, I will personally suck off each and everyone at 3DRealms if this thing is half as good as Quake3 or UT. It\'s beginning to smell like SiN to me.
However, I may be completely full of shit, so wtf do i know.

Hi, my name is George Broussard, and I am one of the homeboys working on Duke Forever. ;> I think it will be a great game, because technology has increased quite a bit since Duke3D, so the graphics will be better and the multiplay smoother. ;> Yes, we ripped off Evil Dead for a few things, but despite what Ash has to say, we feel it adds a lot of character to the game. ;>

I\'m REALLY looking forward to Duke4Ever, but that interview from Broussard made me a bit disappointed. I really thought they were a lot farther along than he indicated. He said that only half the weapons are in, and most enemies aren\'t in yet, either. I expected a March release (or so) but I doubt it now. Oh well, I think it will definitely be worth the wait.
You can go try out the shareware version (one episode) if you want to.

It was good deathmatch, not as great as he makes it out to be though. The very moment Quake came out, Duke3D was dead as far as multiplayer goes (and at that point it was dead single player). When it was released, Duke3D was relatively advanced technology wise, and the interactivity was nice.
Now, I think by the time it gets released, it won\'t be advanced technology wise, and it won\'t be able to come close to the multiplayer of Q3 and probably even UT. By the time DNF comes out, there will be good mods for Q3, and maybe even UT.
But it is not only because you had to listen a lot an find out so where your opponents are, it was because the level design was incredible.
If Duke4Ever does such a revolution in the 3d action genre like Duke 3D did, it will be better than everything else.
Is it worth the $11.99 Best Buy charges for it these days?
I was gonna buy it today but the minimum requirements of a 486 made me think it was gonna be something like Wolfenstein or something. Even Quake had a pentium rating...
Anybody wanny send me Duke Nukem 3D in exchange for Wolfenstein3D or some other moldy oldie?
Let me know... jalapenopepper@hotmail.com
