Comdex Voodoo Info

Some more information about the new Voodoo line has been uncovered, as the Firing Squad guys found out that the Voodoo5 6000 AGP will actually require an external power supply, while the Voodoo5 5000 and 5500 will have to be hooked up to your internal power supply. The report on the Firing Squad also has Quake III screenshots with the T-Buffer in action and a compilation of information they gathered from interviewing 3dfx's Scott Sellers. update by Steve: Actually here is an image of the Voodoo5 board I just got a hold of.

  • # 62 I was speaking more about announced specs, I am well aware that nVidia is BMOC until the Rage Fury Maxx comes out. We have no reason to believe that 3dfx won\'t produce what they\'ve promised, their track record says they will, and thats really all we have to go on.

#66 What company doesn\'t spend all their time trying to convince you that their product is the best and that you should buy it? 3dfx is making a $600 board for two reasons. 1. allows bigest dick claims. 2. People will buy it.

Mmmmm....NV15, Glaze3D, Rampage, etc. Next year is gonna be good for us consumers.

  • You people that are bitching about the power source are gay. Who gives a shit where the power comes from if it is a good product?

GeForce sdr apprx $250 32mb/ram fillrate 420/mpixels (which it cant achieve because of memory bandwidth)
    GeForce ddr apprx $300+ 32mb/ram fillrate 420/mpixels
    Voodoo 5000 apprx $229 32mb/ram fillrate 667-733/mpixels
    Voodoo 5500 apprx $300 64mb/ram fillrate 667-733/mpixels

I am buying a GeForce because I dont want to wait until March to upgrade my TNT1, but I dont think the price/performance aspect on the new voodoo cards look bad at all. (not talking about the v6000)

  • I think the big issue with these cards is going to be heat. You can forget overclocking your CPU with one of the mf\'s in your machine.

Yes, Canupus may be making a GeForce that has an internal PS connector, but the GeForce is within the limits of the AGP bus, Canopus is just playing it safe so the card will work with inferior motherboards.

Using the numbers from the firing squad, the V5 5500 will use 2.5 times the power of the Voodoo3, and the V5 6000 will user over 5 times the power. This is pretty extreme, and if you don\'t think these things are going to run hotter than hell you\'re crazy.

Also, it looks like the T-Buffer AA at least doubles the fill rate requirements. In other words, a V5 5500 using AA is going to be slower than a GeForce and cost more. They call this innovation? Yes, you can turn AA off, but if you do what\'s the point of getting a V5?

I really like they way they actually try to claim that their .25 process is better than the competition\'s .22 and .18. Microsoft looks like an amateur next to these masters of FUD.

  • the funny thing is that all the people bashing the V5 6k are gonna drop a collective load in their pants when they see the benchmarks and grab at their wallets hoping to find $600 in there. Lets face it, the gaming computer market is based in a large part on who has the biggest dick(ie. fastest comp/vid etc) and for the time being 3dfx is Long Dong Silver.
On the power supply. First after the initial shock, who cares. You can afford $600 but not an extra outlet? And second, like someone pointed out Canopus already has a GeForce board with an internal connecter just like the V5 5k\'s. Come on, all you people bitching about he v5 5k post the same complaints about the Canopus GeForce now.

-GeForce owner, man enough to admit that I would love a v5 6k, but don\'t know if I can afford it.
