Weekend Movie Review

by Steve Gibson, Nov 14, 1999 4:33pm PST

Well, weekends are always slow and I took off to watch a pair of movies and figured I may as well give my 'weekend movie review' again. Took a look at Dogma as well as The Messenger. Dogma - As a big fan of Mallrats and Chasing Amy I had some pretty high hopes for the movie, or at least seeing Jay and Silent Bob again. Well to be blunt the movie just didnt do a whole lot for me. There were some great moments for sure, but the dialog focused a bit too heavily on religion and looking at the star power and previous works from these guys I felt the movie was a let down. The Messenger - I was fairly skeptical going into this one, Milla Jovovich I just couldnt really imagine as running around in armor and fighting etc. I was amazed at how well she pulled it off. The movie took me for a real surprise and I totally enjoyed the movie. She's still hot too. It ran a bit long towards the end mostly I felt to satisfy all the history buffs out there who will surely criticize the movie but overall it's a must see. Milla will impress you.

  • I saw The Messenger with 6 friends. It was a unanimous decision. It sucked ass. I should have walked out on it but I am a glutton for punishment I guess. Hell, I sat through all of The Thin Red Line.

Milla looked like she was about to break down and cry, the entire movie. And the war scences. oh please. Guys waving swords around but doing nothing else while Milla yells. Then there was the scene with soldiers climbing up and down a gate and never going anywhere, but I guess we were supposed to believe the were attacking or something.
There was one good thing about the movie though. The catapult kicked ass.

  • SmithÂ’s duplicity exposed: \"Miramax and the Catholic League have been brawling for months over Dogma, a film about holy men behaving badly, which will hit theaters later this year. But even as the filmmakers invoke artistic freedom to defend DogmaÂ’s edgy religious scenes, they are quietly considering whether to re-edit other scenes, including one in which a pair of pistol-packing angels, played by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, bullet-spray a board meeting at a large corporation, and another in which they have massacred a group outside a church. ‘ThereÂ’s definitely the question of Columbine to consider,Â’ says director Kevin Smith.\" (Time, 6/28/99, Adam Cohen)
