New Halo Shots

by Steve Gibson, Nov 14, 1999 4:27pm PST

The gXp page has posted a pair of new screenshots of Halo from Bungie which is just about impossible to get to right now. Why is the page so clogged? Well just look at these things: [shot 1] [shot 2] [shot 3] [shot 4] [shot 5] [shot 6] [shot 7] [shot 8]

  • <sigh> I *wont* get drawn into one of these tps vs fps debates. Suffice it too say you\'re wrong I find (for example) Nocturne VERY immsersive and its not a fps. I found Diablo immersive and its not a fps. Immersiveness isnt a product of a particular viewpoint, its what you do within the confines of the game you\'ve developed that generates that immersiveness.

Also, using Heretic 2 as an example, the combat would have lost ALOT of its visceral appeal if you couldnt see yourself doing all those pole vaults, overhead staff smashes and whirling attacks.

The only game Im anticipating as eagerly as Halo next year is TF2. I just wish Bungie would STOP releasing these shots becuase its akin to torture knowing Im not going to be able to play until next fall/winter.

Ack! Does this count as getting drawn into a tps vs fps argument?

  • I\'ll be happy as long as Halo is open ended enough for someone to add a 1st person mode to it. I havent ever been able to play a 3rd person action game seriously and unless they do something radically different, it\'ll end up being another major disappointment. 3rd person mode just takes away any immersive feeling you might get while playing the game, and it gets in the way of aim. Just try playing Q1,Q2,Q3, or Tribes, or any of the teamplay/action games in 3rd person mode and see how horrible it feels. Its fun for a gimmick, but thats it. Take a look at Heretic 2, it would be amazing to be able to do those moves in 1st person mode. It would feel real, and you\'d actually be able to aim spells properly instead of having relying on that annoying autoaim thingie. I dont know how eveyone else feels about it, but it just seems a waste to have such amazing graphics, and not use them to their full potential in immersing the player. With 3rd person mode, you are never IN the game. Instead, you are controlling a game-character on screen :\\

As for Duke4, as long as it doesnt prove to be a disaster on mid-end, non-3dfx cards like the TNT, as in WoT, it should be amazing.
