Wheel of Time D3D Problems

by Maarten Goldstein, Nov 12, 1999 6:51am PST

The World of Dreams guys saw a reply from Legend's Matthias Worch to this thread, which has someone who just picked up Wheel of Time complaining about Direct3D performance on his PIII-500. This is indeed a problem, here's what Mattias had to say:

Some D3D machines seem to have problems, we're working on fixing it (there might be a fix soon). In the meantime, try setting your Windows desktop to 16bit and turn detail textures off. Maybe that helps. Sorry for the inconvenience (god, does that sound dumb), it sucks for us, too - we want everybody to be able to play the game, too
So how about that demo huh? Should be up today, so you can check D3D performance on your PC.

  • I did notice one difference between the 3.53 and 3.56 drivers. In UT (1024x768, 32-bit, high for everything) the worst case performance on one of my demos (dm-morpheus) dropped from 16 fps to 9 fps. It looked horrible. The average was roughly the same though. I tested it several times, and it happened each time so it wasn\'t due to swapping or anything specific to that run of UT.

As well, it didn\'t happen in 16-bit. Weird... I just went back to the Guillemot drivers, it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling using the drivers from my manufacturer :)

  • People have been saying that Glide is dead for how long now? I think Glide will be alive and well for as long as Unreal-engine games keep coming out. Duke4 is still not even close to being out, and you can bet that it will run best on Glide.

It is true that if you have an nVidia card, your card dictates which games you can play. But for me, it\'s the games I play that dictate the card I\'m buying, and I\'m going to buy a GeForce because it\'s the best card for Quake3. All other Unreal-based games like WoT or UT take a back seat to Quake3 in my rig.

  • but yes, it almost seems that glide only games are disappearing from the market. Software developers know that other chipsets besides 3dfx are making quite a big presence in the industry... I mean look at the TNT2, and the GEForce (why did they have to name it that?) .. I am all for which ever API provides the most support and the best graphics / speed. Isnt everyone? So far, OpenGL looks best in that arena.. only time will tell, but I am not replacing my TNT2 Ultra anytime soon.

Anyway, back to the topic as this is not a video card board :) ....
I agree, WoT\'s support for the various graphics API\'s is probably lackluster... The whole engine just does not seem \'solid\' to me. Fortunately, future driver updates and patches to the game will improve matters. Until then however I will probably not do more than check out the demo....
