CNN Loses Credibility

Oh you guys are going to love this CNN article. Have a read of this one and tell me that CNN is a legit objective news source. Talk about an absolutely amazing piece of work. You'll laugh, you'll cry. Actually on closer inspection CHUD points out that it is the local police making the connections and CNN is just reporting it. However the large focus on gaming and fleeting mention of other influences is disconcerting at best. update Jack - Acually, cnn didn't write it, Reuters (a big news agency did). cnn just posted it.

  • Ok, maybe im missing it but the reeport seems credible to me.

I mean you have to be stupid to begin with to do something like that whos to say he didn\'t do what they said?

All of it seemed possible, im not saying likely though.

Unfortunantely they will tie this to the other shootings, but who are you guys to say they are wrong? It seems some people snap.

After playing Mindnight street madness quite a bit, driving in the city after I had \'thoughts\' of driving crazy. Did I do it? nope, could someone with mental problems snap?

  • I\'ve played Asheron\'s Call, and there\'s bars in it. In those bars you can buy stout. I enjoy drinking stout. Obviously it is becuse of the game. No other explanation makes sense. There is no way I could be predisposed to drinking stout, and probably would not have ever tasted stout in my life if it weren\'t for this video game. Oh, wait, I\'ve been drinking stout since before the game came out. Holy crap! Video game manufacturers have invented time travel, and are planting their evil messages into my brain without even needing the video game. It\'s the CIA, with laser powered satellites! I blame Jerry Falwell.

  • hey now that i think about it..theres a seen in a movie just like that umm or was that the prime time tv show i saw last night????Anyways does anyone get the point here..How the hell can anyone single out one thing that can make someone kill.Sure he had duke on his PC but did he have any violent movies around with scenes just like that or did he watch some tv show the night before that had a scene just like that..or hey maybe he had a dream that told him to do it..That means so far to stop the violence we would have to ban TV Videogames and Sleeping oh yeah and Movies also..So to get rid of violence all the people in the U.S would have to sit around all night and stare at the walls????????

  • BAH! These kids are all fucking retards who happen to lack either the psychological or intellectual capacity to differentiate between reality (read: real world, where geeks don\'t get chicks) and fantasy (read: where geeks tote large, oversized weapons and kill an ungodly number of creatures, with almost reptilian-like recuperative powers)i].

Let\'s see.... when I first started playing Q1, I probably spent 60-70hrs a week gaming, for a 4-6 week stretch of time. So did two good friends of mine. Guess what? I haven\'t felt the need to run outside and massacre the general populace (yet). If anything, I clamor for more vividly violent games, a la Halflife (which are also more visceral in other respects, such as suspense, and hence more enjoyable for me).

I think the media and and their entourage are stupid, and need to have their underwear collectively yanked over their heads. Wouldn\'t hurt to hang em in a cold shower like that, either.

  • Man, can you imagine what it would be like if they started putting age limits and taxes on games like they do cigarettes? Warez would be at an all time high! The use of warez would increase like a champ... instead of kids standing outside the Quickie Mart waiting for an adult to buy them cigs or alcohol, they\'ll be standing outside Babbage\'s and EB and Software Etc trying to scam adults to buy them games... how funny would that be? Pretty damn funny... and I\'d be an adult that would buy them the games... well, unless the kid looked totally suspicious (big hair, pouty lips, despondant look, red coat with high collar, modeled in Japan)... no offense Steve

What I find distrubing is that they find all this pirated software at his place, but they make NO mention to finding any pr0n... what male under the age of 100 does NOT have any pr0n on his computer?

  • Sorry, guys...CNN gets the Smack-Upside-The Head(tm).

The decision to carry a story from a wire service source is common in all news media. The decision not to check-up on facts in said story is also, unfortunately, all too common.

CNN chose to carry a story without looking past the surface, and to use that story\'s most sensationalist aspects - ie gaming violence - to grab some quick media attention points.

#20 is very close to the truth with that National Enquirer shot. The scarrier aspect is that CNN has routinely played up any aspect of gaming violence in similar stories, such as Columbine.

The question is, \"why?\" Why would a news organization which has demonstrated on many other occasions the ability to look in-depth at news stories start stooping to this sort of 3rd-rate journalism?

I don\'t know, but here is my guess. One or more persons currently working at CNN are purposely \"filtering\" such stories because of a personal bias of some sort. Such a bias may be of the \"I know what is best for you \'cause my name is Tipper, or Falwell, etc\" type.
Now before you all go \"conspiracy nut\" on me, relax. It may just be one person who has a bias against violent games, metal music, guns, etc. Not everyone at CNN may have very high journalistic credentials or motives.
It only takes one bible-thumping loud-mouth to stir up a town. I know. I\'ve seen it happen.
