Q3 Release Date Stuff

by Steve Gibson, Nov 10, 1999 2:31pm PST

Ok guys, I've been getting a lot of emails from different people about Quake3 release dates that they have seen in different advertisements etc. Just to be clear, there IS NO RELEASE DATE as of right now. Obviously id and Activision are expecting to release Quake3 some time before Christmas, but that is it. Yes, they were handing out coupons with "redeem by this date" written on them but those are only coupons. Contrary to what you may have read in the latest magazine, or seen at your local software store there is no set in stone release date for Quake3. Nobody knows when Quake3 will come out for sure, it all depends on how quickly bugs are dug up and squashed and gameplay is finalized. So, that's it. If and when there is a release date announced by id or Activision you will see it here. Until then, just ignore the local kid at EB saying he knows when it is coming out. Because he doesnt know.

The code and tools probably wont be released until it ships.
If you just wanna do Q3a mods, then yeah technically you could make do with just notepad, as the compiler will be released with the tools.
Im really not familiar with Delphi, but yeah you should be able to use that to write dlls. Though it might be a lot of work porting the existing game code to Delphi, so you can start on modifying it.
I\'d really recommend MSVC 6.0, its got an excellent interface, excellent documentation, its basically the industry standard, and you should be able to get it cheap at eBay.

  • Avixe - Q3 IS a combo single/multiplayer game. Its not traditional single player
but the whole point of the bot single player aspect of the game is to get people into
what gives all Quake games longevity and that is multiplayer.
Id is guaranteed very good profits buy name alone. And when the people that never
bothered to figure out how to get online find that it is so easy with the ingame brower
there is no doubt in my mind that Q3 will sell as well if not better than the 2 before it.
All id is doing is exploiting the strongest point of their games that a lot of the \"fresh\"
buyers never bothered to try out.
I mean read all the things that #53 wrote. All his points are all driven by one primary
motive. Money. Thats just the way businesses work.

  • I don\'t think we\'ll be seeing any patches like we did with Q2, id has paid alot of attention to detail on this one (see #53). There have been several test releases, and if you guys haven\'t noticed Carmack\'s work log seems to be getting shorter and shorter. (albiet mostly greek to me, seems to be nothing more than minutia.)

I think before Christmas is a good date, simply because of recent statements that most everything is done (bots, engine) and it\'s simply a matter of polishing things up to release a quality game. I\'d look for, at the earliest, Thanksgiving, but no later than Christmas.
