Battlefield Vietnam Announced

by Maarten Goldstein, Jun 18, 2003 12:34pm PDT

How about that boys and girls, Electronic Arts & Digital Illusions have just announced a new Battlefield game - Battlefield Vietnam. Currently in development for the PC, the game will be released early 2004.

The Battlefield franchise is entering a new era with more firepower and beautiful yet ferocious new combat settings. Staying true to the over-the-top, action-packed multiplayer style that gave Battlefield 1942 its critical and commercial success, Battlefield Vietnam will drop players into some of the Vietnam War's fiercest battles. Fighting in theatres from jungles surrounding the Ho Chi Minh Trail to the city streets of Hue, players will choose from two well-equipped forces, the United States or the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and Vietcong.
Like BF1942, Battlefield Vietnam will feature a singleplayer as well as a multiplayer part, and will have "new rendering and sound engines".

  • Alright, let's have it out... I can't understand why folks wouldn't like BF1942 overall. To be fair, I'll list the things I don't like about it to start out, since there aren't many -- In my experience, BF1942 has been the most fun I've had with a multiplayer game since Quake1. Adding to this (and not in EA's praise or detriment) are cool mods like Merciless and Desert Combat, which would not be possible without the BF1942 platform to start with.

Anyway, I don't like the front-end at all. It's very poorly done; it seems almost as if another team made the server browser and front-end from the game development team, it sucks so much. Note to EA -- switching resolutions every time you drop into the menu blows, and the server browser itself is atrocious.

Moving on, I don't like the way that sound travels across the map. Merciless fixed this by having sound get shallower and quieter the farther things are away from you; BF1942 seems to have a distance threshhold at which point sound just cuts off entirely. A worse offender is that bug where if a few sounds are playing at the same time, one of them will just be cancelled out. This seems to happen with airplanes the most... about once or twice a game, a plane will fly overhead during a huge firefight on the ground and the plane will be totally silent, or it'll be playing the engine sound, then just shut off. This bug is most irritating when you can't hear a plane coming to bomb you, so you can't shoot it down first.

Anyway, that's about it really. There might be one or two more little things, like the weird design for using artillery (I'm finally able to bombard a target after about 3 misses and adjustments), but that's so minor it's something I hardly notice.

People complain about the graphics -- on a high end videocard and mid-range system, BF1942 is gorgeous! No other wargame looks as good currently.

People complain about the physics -- they're goofy in some ways, but they're simplified to be fun, like driving the jeep or ramming boats.

People say it's vanilla -- how? Multiple vehicles and classes, fighting on land, sea, or air, on huge maps with radio commands with a bunch of weapons to choose from. This is the most varied action-oriented wargame ever made. BF1942 is king. And I can't wait for BFVietnam :)
