Battlefield 1942 1.4 Patch
by Maarten Goldstein, Jun 11, 2003 11:11am PDTAs noted in this new community update on the official Battlefield 1942 site, the 1.4 patch for the game has been released. There is a full download as well as a 1.31 -> 1.4 update. For you Linux server admins, here is the new release of the dedicated server and if you run a Windows server there is a new dedicated server release for that as well. The Battlefield 1942 1.4 patch offers a ton of changes, fixes and additions, among them there are two new weapons and a change of the "game feeling". Lastly, EA has FINALLY released a (beta) map editor for the game along with some sample maps.

Some of you are dropping out of the server when that map comes up. If that's just because you don't like the map, that's fine, but if it's because you don't have the map, download it now!

So I bought the game and found the spark was quickly killed off, by crappy physics, repetitive gameplay, budget title graphics, sound inconsistency, mouse sluggishness, and of course tons of spamming and spawn camping.
Next stage is modding, well that was a real pain in the ass that dragged on for 6 months of wasted time. Then HL2 was announced and any reasonable modmaker is going to use that, because when it comes out bf42 will seem "old".
I know why bf42 is successful. I was there getting people to try the demo. but in the end, I need more close quarters combat and I would like a boat not to have a rubber band effect or a mod of a vehicle be laggy either; like parallel world with all those great robots, motorcycles, and spider vehicles. once the novelty of vehicles wears off, its really just a cheesy budget game.
I actually feel sorry for those few who put hard work into mapmaking because they are going to end up frustrated by the slippery physics and repetitive gameplay. Not to mention the hundreds of pre-teen whiners and critics. When I uninstalled bf42 it was like a weight off my shoulders, and I found fun games instead of frustrating games full of idiots that just care about their "score".

"IMPORTANT: Battlecraft 1942 created maps can only be joined if they are being run on a dedicated server with content checking OFF. Content checking is a new feature in the 1.4 patch. The only other way to get Battlecraft 1942 created maps to function is to host as non-dedicated and have all clients joining have the same Texture Detail setting as the host computer. "

oooh might that fix/improve the chat lag problem?
- Less damage to planes from stationary machineguns.
WOOHOO! That combined with the more effective AA guns shouldn't leave planes much more powerful. Getting shot dwon in 5 seconds by a guy in some sandbags, or in an APC, sucked.
- Road to Rome bombers re-balanced.
HAHA they probably made them less super ultra insane. Husky might not be the pilot's bitch, now.
Official map editor? Hmm I wonder how it compares with the user-made one. Regardless, more is better.
Only problems with the patch are the new view-obscuring assault rifles, and the whole "breaks every mod" thing. But I figure things will fall into place once 1.4 versions of everything are released. DC and EOD will be fine, and those of us with Merciless will be stuck playing on content-enabled servers.
On that note: if you actually have to disable/delete Merciless to play on a restriucted server, that will put a big dent in the user base. Probably to the point where most everyone will just run restricted servers, and our precious Merciless will go bye-bye... good thing 1.1-1.4 patches have fixed a lot of the stuff Merciless fixes. But I like their sounds and mapskins :\

- We have to slide around now instead of walking. Yes you can change it back via console but that only makes your crosshair move while walking while the majority has is steady. So you are left with having to try and keep the playing field even by keeping it off (sliding). No need for this change..silly.
- lightmaps are borked on ships now
- voting still sucks ass..wtf
- chat lag is still there..wtf
GOOD
- freaking ladder climbing/parachute lading finally behaves "properly". Forgot to try jumping over stuff..probably fixed too.
- AA flak looks fantastic
- reduced MG damage to planes (was a little much before)
Overall not bad..wish they implemented a gui for voting. I can't help but feel many of the "features" and "improvements" where simply a byproduct of other stuff they messed with. Fishy.

Even though they fixed the laggy death camera, it still won't invert even if you select "inverted mouse" in the options. I figured if they fixed the laggy movement the least they could do is fix the fucking invert...
Also, You can look all the way up now which is good, but you still can't look all the way up in machine guns... I suppose that's realistic cuz you can't aim a mounted machine gun 90 degrees in the air, but it sucks cuz those are your best AA guns yet you can't hit the airplanes as they zoom by you.
Other than that... good patch it looks like!
