Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Jun 10, 2003 5:30pm PDTI keep trying to hold out hope that The Hulk wont be a big steaming green turd of a movie but I mean.. doesnt everyone just get the feeling its gonna be just that? I've enjoyed the recent trend of superhero movies for sure and even found DareDevil at least entertaining although shallow even for a superhero flick. Hulk though.. ok it's gonna be good, keep repeating that.. its gonna be good, its gonna be good... hummmmmmm

Is there a function that does the inverse of SELECT DISTINCT?
For example, I have a field that is supposed to contain unique md5 strings. There are 559 entries, but a SELECT DISTINCT shows 552 results. 7 of those 559 entries are dupes.
How can I find the dupes without manually looking at each of the 500+ records?

I got my tickets to 2Fast 2Furious finally. It's a silly movie I'm sure, but I like that special blend of science fiction and comedy. Despite seeing it tonight being almost two weeks before the actual Swedish premiere, I will always know in the back of my head that it premiered in the US last week and thus is way old.

"bah that Hulk looks terrible, what the fuck he's tossing tanks and he's like 15 feet tall and shit - GHEY!"
so I say:
"what's the fargin problem with the bigness of the movie Hulk? In the comics he was way bigger and more powerful than that faeg0t Lou Ferrigno and lame 80's special effects could ever make"
I am glad that it seems more based off the comic Hulk than the TV one.

say the table is called tester1 and the column with the duplicates you want to isolate is called md5.
select md5, count(md5)
from tester1
having count(md5)>1
group by md5;
this should give you the duplicate md5 values and the number of times it is duplicated.

like you press a key and it marks that spot, and then you can scroll to some other spot in the document and hit a key to instantly jump to the original marked spot?
I need to flip between two different parts of a document and it's long and I hate hitting page up and page down so much >:(

I mean, I love a good old social event as much as the next nerd, but I'm all for sitting in a comfy couch; talking; listening to relaxing music; smoking; eating chips. After most of the heavy drinking and buttshaking I've witnessed in nocturnal campus life, I must admit I feel a bit sedated.

For those of you who have Winamp 2.9x, check out the different streaming video channels if you haven't. Right click and pick 'library' from the drop down box, you'll be able to find a bunch of stations there. I am watching one called Radiohead 24/7 videos! I had not seen the Karma Police video before. The jpop/kpop station is too choppy for me, so I guess it is just me and Thom.

What flavor of Mobo and Ram would I want?
Mobo needs: On-Board Sound, LAN, USB2.0. I am partial to ASUS or MSI.
AGP 8X and SATA and/or RAID are optional.
I'm also guessing that Intel-compat boards arn't as sensitive to cheaper ram as AMD systems tend to be

My only compaint is that they need to put out some kind of patch for it considering playing on the net with it is kind of shaky. I would assume this will be fixed.
Wow.
This is one of the strangest movies I've ever seen. It's something of an epic love story with all sorts of other stuff thrown in for good measure. Think Braveheart meets Romeo And Juliet meets The Scorpion King meets The Mission meets a Britney Spears video, all with GORGEOUS cinematography.
It's a story about a 3rd century B.C. indian prince (Asoka) who united India in a bloody war, then converted to Buddhism and renounced violence, bringing Buddhism into the world spotlight (much like Constantine did for Christianity I suppose). It's also the love story between Asoka and the Princess of a neighboring kingdom - Kaurwaki. The story itself is really quite interesting and fairly well presented.
The cinematography, as I mentioned above, is simply gorgeous. Not quite up to "Hero" standards, but close! I was very impressed. All of the actors have great screen presence.. a visual treat. In fact, it's almost perfect.. The most glaring flaw is the fight choreography, which goes from decent/pretty good to quite poor. Obviously, Yuen Woo-Ping was busy with other engagements. :/ The mass battles are quite good, but the one-on-one fights suffer. Anyways, it's a minor complaint and many people probably wouldn't notice. Overall... beautiful.
The actors were pretty good!! I was surprised that it was so good... The female lead especially. The male lead, playing Asoka had his moments of brilliance towards the middle->end of the movie but some stuff was kinda awkward.. He didn't really hit his stride until a 3rd of the way in. But, when he does... good stuff. The secondary female lead, Hrishitaa Bhatt... wow.

That's her. Incredible. Anyways, so the acting was, for the most part, quite good. Very convincing, if overacted in parts. Some stuff was silly/campy, and some stuff was genuinely emotional. A good mixture which allowed the 3+ hour movie (and its viewers) some room to breath.
The music. The score itself was very very good. A lot of smoky eastern themes with beautiful vocals, shakuhachis mixed well with synth effects and so forth. It really fit the mood of the movie, for the most part.. which brings me to the DANCE NUMBERS!
So. The movie's chugging along.. story story story and all of a sudden... BAM! This pop beat sneaks up out of the regular score and a scantily clad belly dancer appears out of nowhere surrounded by scantily clad male dancers and all of a sudden, it's a Britney Spears music video with similarly choreographed (very well choreographed mind you) dance moves and very silly music. Think Tunak Tunak, though slightly less silly. They're amusing, if silly.. it really throws you for a loop though. It's not like the movie is a musical.. They just throw in the occasional dance for the hell of it! It's pretty funny too, since they replace the actors voices during the dance/singing numbers with voices which are OBVIOUSLY not theirs.. So you have the actors lyp-synching to music with a vocalist singing an octave or more higher than their normal range... weird. There's also one or two one-on-one dance "Scenes" which actually manage to be very beautiful and even erotic, particularly the one near the end of the movie. It was much better than the silly crowd-dancing stuff earlier in. :)
Overall though, It was really enjoyable. It actually wasn't TOO predictable and despite the flaws, managed to be very entertaining throughout the entire length (barring a bit of a slow start). There's some really weird/goofy stuff that throws you for a loop (what does that even mean.. throws you for a loop??? anyways..), but that just adds to the overall wacky appeal of the movie.
So, if you're looking for a good movie to rent... Something you probably haven't seen, head on down to the foreign section of your rental store and look for "Asoka".
