I don't think many people realize how important Ultima was back in the 80s... probably because they weren't playing games then. My enthusiasm for gaming basically vanished with the release of Ultima 8 and really never came back. Now I play games more out of curiosity to see the new features and technology. For a while there though, getting the "next" Ultima was like getting a ticket to an alternate world that was a hell of a lot more interesting and sometimes even seemed more substantial than the real one. Maybe it was because I was a kid back then, but I never got that sense from a game again.

Ultima 4 is probably my favorite RPG of all time. After the last 2 Ultima's and the pile of poop that is Ultima Online. I don't think I could bring myself to ever purchase a product he is associated with though. Richard Garriot is up there with George Lucas in my eyes for ruining one of the coolest things I remember from childhood.

Lord British is a money grubing sellout who sold his own child (ultima) for a buck.
