Duke4 Not A 2003 Game

by Steve Gibson, May 29, 2003 12:25pm PDT

Well here is some news I'm sure you guys werent expecting. A recent investor conference call for Take2 has revealed that Duke4 is in fact still not ready to ship, but even more so it looks like it wont show up for this holiday season either! Here's the quote:

"Analyst: Regarding Duke Nukem Forever for the PC, any chance - any possibility under the sun - that we see that this holiday season? Or at what point do you guys just pull the plug on that? Take Two: I think in terms of possibilities under the sun for this holiday season, the answer to that is 'no.' With regards to next year, we're in a wait and see mode at this point. You know, last quarter we wrote it down substantially, so we generally already pulled the plug. And right now we're just hopeful that the team in Dallas will finish it."
The conference call also mentioned that Take2 would be scaling back their E3 presence next year and they are hoping for a Max Payne2 release around January of 2004. Also the mysterious Manhunt game is coming out by October of this year. Thanks Chris! note: The pull the plug comment does NOT mean the game is cancelled at all. Also Scott Miller had some insight into the finance side of things when the write-downs were announced a while back.

  • who cares how long the game takes? as long as they get it right and the tech is still current enough to still be enjoyable. sheesh, its not like there arent heaps of other games in the meantime. and other games have taken ages and everyone has loved them because they were great, and the companies took the time required to get it right ...

everyone fucking whines that the game is taking 'forever' ... hahaha thats a great fucking joke (and so fresh), then when stuff like devastation comes out, that could have done with another few months of play testing (the demo is close to be really good, what i wouldnt give to be able to test some of these games), its get the shit kicked out of it for being rushed and not completed. there is no pleasing some idiots.

someone should take a list of all the morons that are constantly dumping on a game THAT ISNT EVEN RELEASED YET, that has had very little hype that ive been aware of (hope that comment doesnt hurt me), and then when the game comes out and possibly kick ass, they can all drink their fill of STFU juice when they inevitably jump on the bandwagon WHICH THEY WILL.

and sure, if it sucks, then great, they wasted too much time, at least some of us will have had the patience to wait until it came out before we started making fucking comments on it ... some of us are getting on with playing current games ... although i have to remind myself that this IS the shack, where games arent worth playing unless they are either no more than a fortnight old, or are the current flavour of the month online games ... why game devs even login here at all is a fucking mystery to me ...

right, now that ive got that off my chest, im off to start coding before my deadline is due and i get fired

  • First of all I want to say that I'm a major Duke fan, Duke3d got me hooked on computer games, and DNF is at the top of my list for most anticipated games. Now, my two cents: I'm taking this with a grain of salt. Take2 just has to say shit like this to appease their investors. I think 3DR (prove me if I'm wrong) doesn't tell (nor has to) Take2 jack shit about where they are in the development process or a projected completion timeframe. Take2 just says stuff like this cause they don't know what the hell is going on, because 3DR keeps them in the dark so Take2 doesn't go off spewing shit to the press. (Guess it still didn't help though) I believe 3DR knows what they're doing and WILL finish DNF and it WILL own. I'm keeping the faith no matter what. In the meantime, I will be enjoying HL2, DoomIII, and HALO PC until DNF arrives. :)
