Video Games Can Be Good
by Maarten Goldstein, May 28, 2003 2:15pm PDTA nice change from the usual "video games bad" press, this AP article on MSNBC reports on action game players having improved visual skills. Game players are generally better at keeping track of multiple objects at the same time, and can process visual information more efficiently.
In the Rochester study, 16 males between the ages of 18 and 23 took a series of tests that measured their ability to locate the position of a blinking object, count the number of simultaneous objects on a screen and pick out the color of an alphabet letter. Those who played video games for the past six months performed better in all those tests than those who didn't. In a separate test, a group of 17 who never played video games were trained to play the military game "Medal of Honor" and the puzzle game "Tetris." After playing for 10 days, those who learned "Medal of Honor" scored better on the performance tests than those who didn't.Another story about this is available at Nature.com.

You have your adrenaline pumping perpetually for hours at a time in some intense action....you soon begin to get comfortable in stressful situations. It doesn't bother you as much. For instance when driving and some clown almost hits you and you swerve to avoid him. Your reaction is so quick that it doesn't even phase you at all.
It's like "heh...he was kinda close but maybe not that close".
Think about it. If you play FPS games like MoH, Quake3, etc., on a regular basis, you are going to have excellent skills when it comes to what they tested. Everyone that plays FPS on a regular basis has excellent depth perception along with hand-eye co-ordination. Its not like after we play, our knitting skills improve, its what we are using on a regular basis that gets improved.

Video Games Improve Visual Attention Skills
Research strongly indicates that playing violent video games increases the likelihood of aggressive behavior in people who play them. Today, researchers reporting in the journal Nature confirm another effect of the games -- improved visual attention skills. NPR's Michelle Trudeau reports.
