Vivendi Universal Games today officially announced Middle Earth Online, a Lord of the Rings MMORPG in development at Turbine Games (Asheron's Call 1 & 2). Details and screenshots up are at GameSpot. GameSpy also has a few screenshots.

Middle-Earth Online will be a 3D online RPG that will immerse players in the world of Middle-earth and let them create characters using a number of Tolkien archetypes. Characters will be able to adventure throughout the world of Middle-earth depicted in the novels. Along the way, they will form kinships, build race-specific buildings, and craft unique items and weapons.
The title is currently scheduled for release some time in 2004.

  • I can see this being very successful. The Middle-earth universe is a pretty perfect setting for an MMORPG. I think they have the right idea with this, and I know Turbine will make it sell like crazy i'm sure. The one thing I wonder though, we have SWG coming out sometime this year also. With SWG this year and this next year things will be interesting. To me SWG is too much of a movie universe, which is why I don't see it too fun. There is a lot they can do with SWG, but I think there will be too much people living in the movies and causing the game to suck. On the other hand Middle-earth is a huge world in how detailed the books are, the fans have built up for much longer than Star Wars as well. Star Wars makes more money, but LOTR probably has a bigger fanbase (especially with the new Star Wars crap hurting the image of Star Wars).

Okay so I kind of rambled on a bit there. I still see this being a good MMORPG, they seem to have lots they can do in it, I guess time will tell how good it is. It would have been interesting if this game was released around the same time as SWG to see the kind of reactions that both games get at the same time.
