Late Night Consoling
by jason bergman, May 06, 2003 8:00pm PDTWell here we are...one week to go until E3. It sounds like this year is going to be a pretty darn huge show, and I'm getting seriously psyched. The Shack schedule is looking pretty full, but there are some spare moments in there for me to walk around and check things out. So as I did last year, I'll be taking along a list of Must See Titles as recommended by Shack readers. So what should I see? Aside from the big name titles, what do you want my impressions of? Post in the comments and I'll start compiling a list.
| Helix Details Tapwave formally unveiled their Helix gaming system today at a press event. While no images are available from the device as of yet, GameSpot was there, and they have posted a pretty extensive write up of everything they saw. The hardware is said to be capable of Playstation-level 3D graphics, and some of the system's many other features include twin LIon rechargeable batteries, USB support, dual SD slots, Bluetooth, and even force-feedback support. Yowza. A teaser trailer (showing what looks like footage from PS2 games) is up at Tapwave's site, and Fathammer, the developers of the 3D engine for the system, have a mockup on their site which may shed some light on the system's hardware, which GameSpot says resembles the Korean GP32 system. | |
| MGS3 Teaser A teaser image for what is almost certainly Metal Gear Solid 3 has appeared on Konami's official site, counting down to E3, just eight days away. Hopefully the "Hungry for some Snake?" line means this next game will focus exclusively on everyone's favorite character, and not some whiny other guy. | |
| Wolfenstein: Tides of War Ships Activision announced today that Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Tides of War has shipped to retailers. This Xbox-exclusive version contains a new campaign. Wolfenstein: Operation Resurrection for PS2 ships at the end of the month, with its own unique campaign. | |
| Billy Hatcher Interview IGN has conducted an interview with Yuji Naka of Sonic Team, talking with him about their upcoming title Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg. The questions all deal exclusively with this oddball title, and he provides info about the multiplayer modes, GBA connectivity (or lack thereof) and more. | |
| Xbox Controller Colors Revealed Microsoft has announced that the two colors to come out on top in their recent poll were green and blue, and so this October you'll be able to buy Controller S gamepads in those colors. A shot of each can be found at IGN tonight. | |
| New Player's Choice Titles As noted in this story at Games Are Fun, Nintendo has added five new titles to their Player's Choice line of games: Resident Evil, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Rogue Leader, Spider-Man, and Agent Under Fire. All will now be available for $29.99 or less. | |
| Memorick Announced Microids, the developer of such PC games as Syberia and Post Mortem has announced Memorick, The Apprentice Knight, an action/adventure game inspired by the legends of King Arthur. The game is planned as an Xbox exclusive and will be released this Christmas. | |
| No Unity at E3 Sorry Llama-fans, Jeff Minter's Unity will not be shown at this year's E3. This latest title from the creator of Tempest 2000 and Llamatron won't be unveiled until next year's show. | |
| Syphon Filter: Omega Strain Revealed Here they are, the first official screenshots from Syphon Filter: Omega Strain, the new online-capable game from Sony. Apparently this game will support voice chat when used with either the SOCOM headset or the one announced yesterday from Logitech (which is similar, but not identical). | |
| | Sphinx Q&A IGN has posted a Q&A with Rob Loftus, the creative manager at THQ on Sphinx and the Shadow of Set, the upcoming Zelda-esque adventure game from Eurocom. Accompanying the Q&A are new screenshots from the GameCube version of the game. |
| NBA Jam Q&A pun][sher is awfully excited about this Q&A with Acclaim's Brandon Fish, where the producer reveals some new info on NBA Jam 2004, the return of the venerable sports franchise. I hate sports games, but even I loved NBA Jam back in the day. | |
| Metroid Prime Mania Some insane gamer has set the world record for beating Metroid Prime after managing to complete the game in a remarkable 1 hour 46 minutes. Details on how he accomplished such a feat can be found at Twin Galaxies. | |
| Another Metroid for GBA? Citing multiple unnamed sources, Gamers.com is reporting that Metroid: Zero Mission and Sword of Fire have shown up on a release list from Nintendo of America. Is this a new Metroid and a localized version of Fire Emblem? We'll know soon enough. | |
| Misc. Media GameSpot has posted the intro movie from Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut (GC), while IGN has new shots from Rogue Ops and the box art from the newly-titled F-Zero GX (both for GameCube) as well as a crapload of shots from Madden 2004 (everything). Also, Capcom has posted a trailer from Mega Man X7 for PS2 (thanks Gamers.com), and CvG has tons of shots from Enter the Matrix (everything) and a trailer from The Hulk for GBA. |

If I buy an xbox here soon when the price is dropped 50 bucks, what do I need to do in order to be able to run emulators on it? I'm mostly interested in the superNES emulator as I would like to be able to play FF2/3 again (esp 3). Im assuming I will need a modchip, but I have been hearing about the exploit with the save game feature and all this other stuff, but I really havent been keeping up on xbox news recently at all.
Anyways, anyone out there got much info on this?

Integrating phone technology into a handheld console doesn't make much sense. Not many people would be willing to to pay for th extra hardware when they may already have a phone. And usually people shopping for a new phone go for the smallest and sleekest models.
Basically what tapwave is doing is making a PDA tailored to the gaming market and ensuring that they may will get games that are better than what the palm developement community has produced. Currently I own a Tungsten T, it has tons of software, has an excellent screen, has MP3 capability and movie playback. Unfortunately the games suck. Even if good games come out gradually for the tapwave handheld, there is still value in owning it because it can do more than just play games. I guess I could think of it as a gaming PC that fits in your pocket, where as the GBA GBSP is a snes that fits in your pocket.

"I used to be a hardcore PC gamer a few years back."
...
"However, the general PC gaming community turned into a very abhorrent environment plagued by paranoia, cynicism, and even racism. It was at the point where you can't win a game without expecting explicit sexual insults or accusations of cheating."
"As a result, I found myself drawn to the console gaming community.
I think he has a point but I still need my pc multi playing fix.
I like how these companies come out and "challenge" the game boy advance's market... The GP32, the Neo Geo Pocket/Pocket Color, the Wonderswan/Wonderswan color, the Nokia N-Gage, the Sega Game Gear/Nomad, and the TG-16 portable...
Where are all they?
Handheld gamers dont really care that much about "playstation level graphics", and in a way, handheld gamers are the most mature of the bunch, as they understand a great game is based on gameplay... And there is a reason that the GBA sells so well... It has great games, which are fun, and overall great to play.
Unless this new handheld launches with SERIOUS support, most gamers wont invest what is sure to be alot of money (listen to this things specs!) on another "could have been" unit.

Still, that'd be cool if you could check out the MGS remake Jason. I'm wondering how it'll compare to MGS2 and MGS3, as far as graphics and feel go.
New Metroid GBA game? Hell yes. Fusion is probably my most played GBA game.

Also please hug the Troika guys for me and give them my love.
2 games I'd be interested in hearing more about are:
-Onimusha Tactics for GBA
-Steel Battalion Online for X-box.
Also, maybe the Bioware booth? I'm curious if they'll mention anything besides their expansion packs.

Also, definately check out the Billy Hatcher stuff from Sonic Team, and bug those guys about a Nights sequel!
Also, looks like Psychonauts (X-box) might be delayed until 2004. :(

Hopefully they'll clarify this at E3.
