BF1942 Secret Weapons Q&A

12

HomeLAN Fed has posted a Q&A with Mikael Rudberg, producer at Digital Illusions. Mikael is asked about the newest Battlefield 1942 expansion pack Secret Weapons. It is mentioned that mod tools for Battlefield 1942 won't be released until near the end of the year, which is pretty dissapointing.

Of course... why would they give out mod tools to make mods that would trump their own expansions?

These guys are really starting to piss me off. First they say the chat lag isn't important, now no tools until the end of the year? I wonder if this is EA being retarded or DICE.

blame it on EA by default. DICE might not have wanted to release the SDK, but EA are the ones to call the shots. They're probably the ones who think releasing expansion packs until they can't release any more is a good idea.

I blame DICE by default. It's their I.P., EA is just the vessle to mass produce it, right?

DICE has to make the patches, is more involved with the code, and therefore is more inclined to have the SDK ready to deploy. If it was an EA in-house title, then I'd hammer them... but it seems DICE deserves more blame at this point.

Sorta like trying to blame Activision for not releasing Quake tools... when it is id's decision to make...

correct? or am I off base here?

it depends on how their deal was hashed out of course, but in general it's sort of like the music industry. The developer turns into the publisher's bitch, at least in the case of large companies (EA/Activision) with small companies (DICE).

Like I said, DICE could have even been the ones to say "lets not release the SDK", but EA probably could have also said "no, lets keep the standard of good mod support that most other games have, and release some form of SDK for them".

It's hard to guess with little information, which is why I'd just default to blaming EA unless I heard otherwise.

In team based gameplay chat is just a hair helpful, no wait Dice/EA is right

BTW during the beta all of the EA guys were saying that it was DICE's decision(sp) to release the SDK, we were on them like white on rice to release the tools and they wouldn't budge. I might have believed that but DICE's track record isn't to release a game then release expansion packs.
