DOOM 3 Q&A
by Maarten Goldstein, Apr 30, 2003 12:40pm PDTHaven't seen one of these in a while, a new DOOM 3 Q&A. GameSpot talked to Tim Willits about various aspects of the game and also managed to score a new screenshot.
GameSpot: There's so much anticipation for Doom III at this point that it seems larger than life. Will the final game be as revolutionary as many expect it to be? Tim Willits: Doom III will truly change what people expect from a video game experience. Every piece of technology, from the rendering system to the six-channel surround sound and the realistic physics, is coupled with incredible art and design to create a world that is hyperrealistic and more interactive than ever. Players will be drawn into the mood and atmosphere of the game to the point where they feel like they are part of the world--not just a character running through a noninteractive set piece.

(Btw I hereby retain all rights to this word. Don't make me sue!)
I personally won’t be buying Doom 3 because id can’t make single player games and it looks too slow to be any fun. On the other hand Half Life 2 sounds fantastic, running at the same speed as the original and with a great story and varied environments. I’d personally like to see HL2 vastly outsell Doom 3 so id go back to what they’re good at and make multiplayer games, but that’s just my opinion. I can't even begin to guess which will actually sell more.

I really hope it doesn't look anything like the pussy gothic/rocky architecture in some Quake3 maps and the ocasional lava pit.

It's the whole room, atmosfere this graphics engine creates. It's kinda crisp and clean and dark and solid.
Hard to explain. Man, can't wait!
"Never before in a multiplayer game have players had to worry about their shadow and whether or not it has revealed their position, or been able to shoot out lights so they can hide in the darkness. "
guess he doesn't know about SplinterCell?

I don't know why, but I see this and I just can't seem to imagine how they can possibly deliver a compelling single player experience. Sure being a dark hallway being stalked by zombies or a pink demon or an imp with moody lighting and shadows will be cool the first 3 times, but after that? I'd get bored with it. If the entire game consists of "Your alone in a dark area and don't know what could hit you" I'd just be like "blah...i don't even give a shit anymore...make another random monster jump out from behind a window, I dont care"
Half-life 2 on the other hands seems to have an involved back story, evil government agencies, evil alien presence, a charismatic hero with a name, and a cool world.
Doom's world was just basically one of thousands of monsters trying to assrape you at once, and you defending yourself with serious artillery. I don't know how this new doom is going to work, It'll be scary the first time you encounter a monster perhaps, but once you know exactly how powerful it is, it won't be scary anymore.
This isn't a fanboy post btw, I am fully looking forward to, and planning and buying both Doom 3 and Half Life 2. I'm just a little worried/interested in how exactly they are going to pull of this immersive single player experience and keep it immersive beyond the initial shock of seeing amazing graphics and seeing a new mosnter for the first time.

OMG you will have a HAMMER and you will use it to CRUSH and SMASH everything! You will compete against 1000 other players on a huge networked battlefield.

GS: What do you think of Half Life 2?
TW: It's going to fail, no offense Valve. The tech is older than my grandmother! It in no way competes with Doom 3.
Sorry Half Life fanboys :( :(

Doom III - Halo 2 - Stalker - Halflife 2
The only thing i dont like is the characters head with the chainsaw is not round. Halo got round wheels right. Which is impressive

Valve and Id stand to make much more money off of the licensing of their engines than off of the actual sales of individual games.

But if past experiences taught me anything, the Original DOOM was scarier than Half Life if my opinion. Hearing a zombie roar, or an imp hiss and turning around and finding out that he is RIGHT THERE scared me. I hated going into all dark areas in DOOM.
Bring on both games! :D

Graphics are nice but its just a bonus.
What i hate the most is when ppl judge the gameplay even before it comes out, the only thing you can judge at the moment r the graphics and they look pretty.
