Half-Life 2 Info
by Steve Gibson, Apr 28, 2003 4:36pm PDTSo although we wont be seeing any legit full blown Half-Life 2 previews showing up just yet, there is quite a bit of info floating around in internet land that is no longer under NDA and many of you who happen to have gotten your hands on some magazines are probably privvy to this, but here you go some more Half-Life 2 info in addition to the previous info (and more here) (Thanks John, Carnivac, Eric):
- ALL objects in the game world are affected by the physics - Movement speed of HL will be retained - Drivable vehicles in both single and multiplayer - Engine technology scales based on your system specs - Known locations: City17 in east Europe, a harbor, a jail, the suburbs, a dried up ocean, an icebreaker (large ship) - Multiplayer is important and multiple game modes will be supported - Coming out before Christmas 2003 is 'certain' (read: Sep 30th) - The editor is called 'Hammer' and will be included, sounds like a complete development environment for maps, mods etc. - TF2 will be using the HL2 engine, once they decided to use the HL2 engine they stopped giving information as they didn't want to blow anything relating to it. TF2 will 'arrive soon'.Keep in mind, NO LINKING OF SCANS. If you want to see what the game looks like, go buy PCGamer, CGM, or CGW.

"When Robin Walker, Yahn Bernier and John Cook -- who are some of the leaders on the development team -- first started going toward the path they wanted to with Team Fortress 2, toward the game that they wanted to make once they'd defined it, it became clear that the Half-Life technology base was going to be pretty limiting. It has been said 'on the record' that there's a new internally-built engine, and TF2 will use that. So rather than showing more old screenshots and stuff that's in development while we're building the new engine, we decided to put it back into the pot and cook it a bit more. We'll start showing it again once it gets to a certain point, and we're now getting there.
There are a lot of rumours flying around suggesting that it's never coming out, but it's absolutely still in development. We hold our quality bars up really high. When people finally get to see it, they're going to understand what we've been up to and why we've been busy doing that rather than other things."

I remember one point in HL when I had descended a ladder and this guard comes running around a corner, screaming. It first freaked me out, until he got to me and said "Hey Gordon!" then continued running and screaming. A bug, probably, but it was freaking hilarious!
What's your Half-Life moment?

Oh well, I'd rather have seen Valve give this information to online sources that magazines.

Hammer is simply the renamed WorldCraft map editor. They did the renaming months ago.

This is something I love to hear.
One reason why I think HL2 will have more of an impact than DOOM3 is Valve's apparent understanding that not everyone plans on running out and buying a $300 video card to play a game.
My roommate bought HL and still plays CS/DoD/NS on my old PII300.

They had great reviews, they didn't take anyones shit, and above all it was fun to read... kinda like Maxim (including the hot chicks) but for games. Oh PCXL... how I miss ya.

This didn't work out so well in Devastation. It was a gimick that just ate CPU cycles, and in fact, if I hadn't read it in a preview of the game, I would have never known that you can pick up stuff and toss it. I mean, why would you throw an egg crate at someone when you have a shotgun?
On the other hand, the physics in Postal 2 are really fun, fluids run downhill (gasoline which you can light, etc) and you can kick a barrel and make it roll downhill, then shoot it and make it explode.
I guess it can be a good thing in a game... I'm sure if anyone is going to pull it off well it'll be Valve. Well... I guess id could do it... uh, maybe Ion Storm...
Well hey, bring on the physics!

Especially not between hammer and worldcraft 3.X like jackomack mentioned. Jackomack, if your friend couldn't figure out how to use hammer and had to resort back to worldcraft 3.X, then your friend is not very bright. But, you probably meant worldcraft 2.X, because 3.X and 2.X have a few more differences. But still, the differences between 2.X and 3.X aren't so big that someone should not know how to use 3.X.
Seriously, if I say .X again, I'm gonna go crazy.
Anyway, this HL2 stuff is good news. Means TF2 and CS2 will be out soon as well. Very cool stuff.
They should just call it the Sequel Engine.
