Tribes: Vengeance Announced
by Maarten Goldstein, Apr 24, 2003 12:59pm PDTTribalWar has posted a press release (if the site is a little slow click here), announcing a new Tribes game called Tribes: Vengeance. The game is being developed at Irrational Games (System Shock 2, Freedom Force), and is currently scheduled for a late 2004 release. Vengeance will feature a single and multiplayer component and oh yeah, the game is now powered by the Unreal engine.
In Tribes: Vengeance's single-player campaign, gamers become immersed in a roiling galactic thriller. Throughout the game, the player catches glimpses of other, interrelated stories that are unfolding behind-the-scenes. In addition, gamers are given the opportunity to experience the full scope of the single-player story through multiple viewpoints and characters. Powered by an enhanced version of the Unreal Engine, the world is brought to life with characters that have facial expressions and fully-realized personalities, vehicles that kick up dust as they pass by, and weapons that display spectacular effects.Tribal War's news item includes several pieces of concept art as well as a screenshot. Update: A preview is now online at PC.IGN. There isn't a whole lot of new info, but it does touch on modifications being made to the Unreal engine.

It's always felt awful, it will always feel awful and it will always be awful.
It's difficult to explain, but every game using it just feels like the players have no weight ingame at all. Almost as if they aren't part of the game world, but they're just there. Best way to describe it would be that it doesn't feel solid at all.

I loved Tribes, Tribes 2 was too much of a hassle to be a good game.

Very few games out there seem to illicit this diversity of opinion, or the extreme level of appreciation from a small amount of people.
Personally, it makes me want to yawn. But that's beside the point.
Don't get me wrong - I love many B movies. It's just the community doesn't gawk over them as much as other games like Doom 3 or HL2. Just like B movies don't get advertised much.
I hope this owns... though I probably won't play it, never really was a Tribes fan. Unless they bust out some mad vehicle skillz ala BF1942 and PlanetSide.

I thought this next upcoming sci-fi title from them was gonna be System Shock 3. :(

Vengeance will also sport a wealth of new play styles including more sports like ones. Tribes producer Tony Oakden was heard to say:
"We think of it like Tony Hawk with spin fusors."
damnit it was sounding good up until this point, lets hope they don't try to go the route of UT2003.
but I have faith, look at the games they have made in the past

But make no mistake - it will never be as good as the first. The first was perfect, and never needed a sequel.

I think I'll have to examine Irrational's plans for the product and decide from there.
