by Maarten Goldstein, Apr 22, 2003 10:16am PDTThe first images of Half-Life 2 from a few magazines are starting to pop-up, and if you're one of the lucky ones you've already gotten a nasty-gram from one of the magazines in question. To keep things nice with our printed counterparts we wont be posting links to the scanned content of those articles you'll have to go buy the magazines when they are available. However the one morsel that has been deemed acceptable is this image (mirror) which is entirely blurry and doesnt tell you much of anything! If you know the shelf dates of magazines carrying HL2 stories drop me a line and I'll update this list:

But people we are forgetting something. These two games probably have their own followers. HL MAY have sold more copies than all of the quakes. Who cares!
I for myself can say that I have not played in better engine than one of id software. Their movement and everything suits me. I still play Action Quake 2 and Quake 2 DM.
Nothing more, nothing less.
All I want to say is instead of spitting on someone's work ( Doom 3, id Software) support what you think is the best game but don't put something down, especially if that something has been proven to be quality product and has more than anything else defined PC gaming.

Low poly, high res textures, *maybe* some bumpmapping (impossible to tell). Then again, I wasn't impressed with Doom III screenies either. When are they going to start making high poly stuff :/

Lets say that Half-life 2 goes gold on September 30 and will be available via Steam download on October first vs the boxed version (box, disk, manual) being available around Oct 14.

The new issue of Computer Games magazine just dropped at the EB where I work and there's a 4 page Half-Life 2 spread in it. Here's a couple of tidbits.
1. The released is quoted as being before September 30th of THIS year.
2. If you haven't figured it out already and still believe the rumors then I'm here to tell you that the game will NOT be XBox only. It's coming for the PC baby!
3. The new engine is designed to be competetive, not ground breaking which means a) loud-mouth technophiles will proclaim the game dead before launch and b) the other 99% of us won't likely have to shell out major money for a new system (Doom 3...ahem). The game will apparently be able to squeak by on a 700mhz processor with a DX6 compatible Video Card, while the optimal spec is quoted at 2ghz and a GeForce 4 or equivalent card.
4. The screenshots look great. If I had to compare it, I would put it just above Unreal 2 and just below Deus Ex 2.
5. The game is going to progress completely in first-person just like the original so don't worry about poorly directed and hastily thought out 3rd person cut-scenes here. It sounds like there are more defined characters than in the first, but still keeping it slim and based around a survival/action-adventure theme.
6. The story assumes Gordon Freeman (yes, you play Gordon) decided to go with the G-Man at the end of Half-Life as opposed to allowing himself to be annihilated by a horde of marauding aliens as was the other choice. Apparently it takes place in a fictional location in Europe known as City 17 and one of the important characters appears to be the daughter of one of the scientists whose name is Alyx...the girl seen in the promo art so far released.

The scans on the net aren't legal, so most legit sites have pulled any links to magazine scans of Half-Life 2. As always, don't ask for links. Do some searching on other sites, you might get lucky, you might not.
DNF E3 2K1 movie. I guess George B & co were right. No game other than Doom 3 looks better than Duke4never artistically or technically. anywho Halflife was a bit on the crap side so I am interested in the main event..the Thief 3 screenshots.
