As if the server wasnt totally bogged down enough already. Mike Wardwell of the CPL was kind enough to hand over the FRAG3 final 8 demos to myself to release to you guys. As many of you guys know Q3Test v1.08 has some problems with demo playback. I would recommend checking out either the comments on this news item (which will be a bit slow, sorry) Hope you guys enjoy the demos, and thanks to Damage for hosting the files. Oh, almost forgot. Here is the link to the demos!

  • #28: Armour. That\'s probably one of the things that makes Q3Tourney a slow level.

Since there\'s two armours, each player is satisfied running away to get it, and the health. Maybe if there was one area with health and armour, or one with health and one with armour, we would have more confrontations.

I don\'t think the lethalness of the shaft makes the game slower, it should make frags easier if anything, but the tightness of Q3Tourney makes it too easy to run away.

I think too many people are judging all of Quake3 based on that single level.

  • I don\'t think it\'s just the footsteps. It\'s more the lightning gun. When your opponent can kill you in under 2 second even if you have 100 armor, you\'d be pretty wary to get in his face and play agressively, especially with $10000 on the line. If you have something like Unreal Tournament where the weapons do comparatively a lot less damage to the players, sure, you\'ll have people being more agressive.

When the reduced damage lg comes out, people will probably play a bit more agressively.

Oh yeah, to get a feel for what q3 feels like without footsteps, play it under WinNT, where the sound is so fucked up, not only will you not be able to hear footsteps, you won\'t be hear half the weapon sounds, armor pick ups, teleporter sounds and other noises important in 1 on 1s. I sure hope they get that fixed.

  • I guess we should just accept that it really depends on the players style. I played QW and it is faster, no doubt. But the game itself is faster. The rockets are faster, the maps are tighter (making it seem even faster still) and you definitely do get surpised a lot more. But some people still play Q3 in the same super aggressive style as they played QW. Footsteps or not.

I just don\'t think footsteps AUTOMATICALLY make the game slower. I think there are other factors involved that attribute to the slower gameplay just as much if not more so than footstep sounds. I bet if Q1 had them (and they were done within reason, unlike how loud Q2\'s were) that the game would still be considerably faster than Q3. In Q3, Some people will choose to sneak, others will still go all out.

The footsteps in Q3 are still reaching out a bit farther than I would like. If the radius was cut down to where you had to be REAL close to someone to hear them, I think that would be the best situation.

I guess you could make an arugment that Quake is somewhat like boxing in the sense that styles make fights. Take Tyson for example. He was considered invincable until someone actually boxed him. Buster Douglas wasn\'t even a very good fighter. His record sucked. But Tyson couldn\'t handle his style. Holyfield fought him the same way Douglas did and the result was the same.

If you have two people playing defenseively, it gets painfully boring. Like the DeLaHoya-Trinnidad fight not long ago. Even though it was mostly DeLaHoya that was in super defensive mode.

Did any of that make sense? :)

  • All of you try something:

Play Quake3 without sound. I\'ll tell you the game relies a lot (if not all) about reflexes and sight. The game is only slowed down because we can hear from far away. If we took footsteps away, you could dance around at the bottom of the RL in q3tourney, you could not be heard except for item pickups. The game will be a LOT faster, just like Quake was.

I never played quake, but I watched a few demos, and man were they intense...because they included a lot more fighting.

Possibly the reason for the defense is that there was money at stake. If you were playing for 40,000 dollars, you\'d be a lil more careful than if you were playing a regular old duel.

    No sound! Try it. hehe

  • Don\'t get me wrong here guys. I know I\'m being critical but I also know these are very good players. They\'d most likely beat me down.

I just think the tournaments, the money and the online recognition is becoming a factor in the style of play. People play defensively to a ridiculous extent now. It doesn\'t seem like it\'s just footsteps like some would have you believe either.

I never cared about Quake as a pro sport before but now I\'m starting to think it could end up being a really bad thing. If everyone online starts mimicking this style of play, it just won\'t be Quake anymore.

Oh well, fuck it. I\'m bored and rambling. Just wanted to clarify that even if I\'m being a bit harsh, I don\'t mean to say these players don\'t have skills. They obviously do. I think the temptation of money and recognition is just getting to some of them perhaps.

  • You know, I\'ve had a lot of criticism for Thresh in the past. His constant whining of the footstep issue gets on my nerves to no end. But I have to say, his Q2 demos are far and away more exciting to watch than any of these frag3 demos. Then again, My shitty demos are more exciting to watch than this crap.

What it boils down to is a lot of the so called \"elite\" players these days are starting to play too defensively. I think they\'re more worried about not LOSING then they are about WINNING. Quake is all about getting in there and kicking the other guys ass but that\'s not the way these \"pros\" play anymore. I think they\'re worried about their reputations or something.

I also can\'t help but think that\'s why Thresh doesn\'t play much anymore. Maybe he\'s afraid of being dethroned and uses the footstep issue as a scapegoat? Makes you wonder.

It reminds me of my favorite Basketball team that will remain annonymous. They get a lead then they start playing not to lose instead of playing to win. And then the game gets boring and they end up losing. Speaking of those sorry bastards, they\'ll be playing in a little bit so I better go and get some shit done before my 2 hours of torture. :)

  • a GREAT example of 1on1 play was a DM Demo that sTeve posted last year.. it was a quake1 match.. cant remember the guys name, sTeve put \".. one of the best 1on1 gamers i\'ve ever seen..\" if i remember right. It was on DM6.. those 2 guys were goin at it fast and furious, and the level design is similar in principle to Q3Tourney.. teleporters and escape arounds all over. He\'d use every trick he could to come out ahead of his opponent, or right next to in order to get the jump on him.

Post that demo again if you have it sTeve, its how a 1on1 game should be played.

  • i\'d like the 15 minutes back that i wasted watching the Final. I\'m still not sure how they got the score up to 10-9 .. because Wombat and Hakeem were playing ultra-pussy style. Since i saw from Wombats perspective.. any time he got hit, and fell below 100 armour.. he\'d run off to get more.

Several times he\'d make a lucky rocket shot on Hakeem and send him running. Instead of chasing him, or taking the teleporter to get a jump on his position, he ran as well! What the fuck?? THESE guys made it to the final?? I wanted to see some badass who knows the level, and was keeping track of his opponent 100% of the time, and when the guy ran, he\'d be waiting around the corner with a rocket ready.

Footsteps had nothing to do with this either.. wombat used the function goin up the stairs to upper yellow armour, but nothing more than that.

He\'d camp the lower teleporter, waiting for the armour to respawn.. Hakeem only came through ONCE... ONE friggin time.. and what did Wombat do? shot at him, and ran in the teleporter.. no follow up shots.. nothing.

Ive seen more aggressive CHESS games than this..

At the very end? Where did Wombat die to lose 10-9 ? Right where he spent 90% of the game, by the lower teleporter.. i laughed out loud when i saw that.. dumbfucker. Hakeem isn\'t that great either, he spent 90% of his time on the upper Armour... god damnit, i want my 15 minutes back.

  • I just watched that 1-0 Xenon vs Wombat demo. I got news for you anti-footstep people. Footsteps had NOTHING to do with that lame piece of shit. This was a direct result of two players that were completely unwilling to engage the other. I watched from Xenons perspective and ALL he did was pace back and forth picking up armor in the top yellow armor room. The only time there was action was when Wombat left his perch and came and attacked but as soon as either one of them got hit, they would run for health. Even if they were barely hurt.

Towards the end Xenon got impatient and started going downstairs just to see wombat camping the teleporter. That\'s probably where he was 95% of the whole game.

Xenon never even once used the walk function. He was obviously not concerned about noise. He was running and bunny hopping. Neither player wanted to fight. That\'s all there is to it. They were both content to hang out on opposite ends of the map and collect armor.

Footsteps on Q3tourney are pointless in this situation anyway. They both obviously knew the general location of their opponent. On a map that small you should always have a general idea where your opponent is with or without step sounds. If you\'re camping the upper level armor and you don\'t see the other guy in that room or by the RL beneath you, he\'s by the other yellow armor in all likelyhood. Not exactly rocket science.

Download that demo and watch it in fast forward (timescale 6). It\'s plain to see it was the players mentality that made for such a boring match. Not something as trivial as footsteps. It\'s not like Q2 footsteps you know. You can\'t hear them clear across a map like you could then. I still thnink the radius should be turned down just slightly more which should really end that tired argument.

I personally think the design of that specific map has a lot to do with the pussy\'ish style of play you often see. You don\'t see that kind boring bullshit on q3test2.
