by Maarten Goldstein, Apr 12, 2003 8:43am PDTHm yeah, Postal 2. Seems to me that except for the surrounding hills, this game could've been done in the Build engine almost. Talk about a waste of an engine license. I can't say it's not entertaining in a way, but the production values are just horrible. Haven't checked the Indiana Jones demo yet but I intend to do so later today. Enjoy the Saturday, I will! Movie: I guess that was your accomplice in the woodchipper.

Let's start with the public reaction, especially from people who a) didn't even download or try it and b) people who loaded it up for 5 minutes just to have an excuse to make negative posts about it and say they played it.
I think the media has had a hugely negative effect on the game community. It's like we heard that game violence is so horrible and wrong for so long on TV and in magazines that it caused the majority of us to become so fucking critical and scared of violence and so accepting of ridiculous teen-rated gloss overs publishers like EA are sticking to. These are quickly becoming the standard. Look at Vietcong's censorship from the demo to the full version...hell, I read interviews with potential Fallout 3 designers who said that if they ever made the game, they were going for a TEEN RATING. WTF. They went on to list several parts of Fallout 2 that they think in hindsight were inappropriate and they would never repeat. That kind of shit scares me, like George Lucas going back and changing the Han Solo/Greedo scene. WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON? Alot of the game industry has totally pussied out on us because publishers are fully aware that the media influence has worked.
The game community is starting to sound more and more every day like the religious fundamentalists and tight wad conservatives that I thought we all hated for their strawman censorship arguments. Now I see a huge amount of comments that boil down to: "OH NO, this game can't be like this or the media will get angry and bring poor attention to us!" Congratulations guys, with this mindset, you've let Jerry Falwell and the gang win.
Now, back to Postal 2 itself. Yes, it's ultra violent. It's over the top. It challenges everything people are offended by. It challenges people to face their fears about departing from the flock of the politically correct world we live in. As pure satire about the current state of the media, it's a total success. Just look at how so many people are not playing this game because it offends their tender sensibilities. Postal takes this bullshit, covers it in gasoline, and flicks a match on it. Let's burn away the Demolitionman-esque mindset we've come to accept.
Beneath all the satire, I find a very entertaining game of humorous ultraviolence, free will, and exploration. The weapons have excellent feedback. The shovel is absolutely brutal...the way it can just bat people to the side like its a sledgehammer, the way the screen shakes and the excellent BONGGGGGG sound of smashing something. It's perfect. Every weapons is like a little mini-game themselves just with how much you can do with each one. Play golf with someone's head with the shovel. Create huge trails of gasoline through a civvy area then light a match and watch the fire weave all over the place and cause a huge chain reaction. It can just turn into pure mayhem and destruction.
The character models, especially their faces, are well above average. The lighting is very well done, daylight lighting is hard to get looking right, and imo they did a great job. No piece of art really detracted from the overall look of the game for me. The fact that you can go in any building and fully explore them rather than them just being static background scenery is great. The sounds are perfect for the game. The open-endness of travel and completion of missions is a breath of fresh air. This game pees in the mouth of the trend of games that are completely linear scripted sequence mazes that spoon feed the experience to the player.
Postal 2 is a nice break from all the tactical shooters that I absolutely love and I think everyone should try it with an open mind, without the time limit, and just go crazy with it. Play with all the items (bullet-time inducing cat nip! :D), try to find all the secrets, and just play with the environment. When you're all done, realize that Maarten's comment about how it could have been made with the build engine is completely ironic, because the game DOES hark back to the day when games weren't scared to have sick/twisted/satirical/dark humor, over the top action, and tongue in cheek player character quips and commentary -- and it has well exceeded my expectations.
flame away :)

Separate from the bonus campaign released last week, Microsoft of Japan has released a bonus pack featuring 2 new random maps and a Norse campaign. These extras were originally for people who preordered the game through EBWorld and, though released only in Japan, are in English and work with US versions of the game.
First, d/l this: http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/f/9/6f999c6c-a600-4758-8ed5-a21eba7fb270/BonusPack.exe
Unzip and copy the .xml and .xs files to your .../Age of Mythology/rm folder, and the .scn file to your .../Age of Mythology/scenario folder. You can then select it by going to Campaign -> Play Campaign -> Load Scenario in AoM.

Does 1600x1200 @ 85Hz, it's HUGE and has no problems (no scratches, no color fading, no dead pixels, nothing). I realize it's older, but there's nothing I can find about it on the web. It's for PC, not Mac.
Anyone? Thanks

I've accedently wrote a second track on a cd which hid the first track. I need to recover the data from the first track. Is there a simple program that can get the job done?
Thanks for any help
