This year's QuakeCon has been announced, and will happen August 14-17. The action is moving though, as the event will now take place at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Dallas instead of the Hampton Inn in Mesquite. No tournaments have been announced yet.

Doom 3 is not expected out until the fall.

Carmack will demo a much more advanced version of Doom 3 at this year's
Quakecon, than that of what was seen at last years E3.

Carmack states that real-time rendering will be so dynamic that animators
will be able to produce films using game engines. Much like Fountainhead
Entertainment's T.V. Series Sidrial, which uses a heavily modified Quake 3
    engine.

An example of a scare tactic is given as you are creeping past a room with
a zombie chowing down on some scientist brains, an Imp crashing through the
grated floor below and starting to launch fireballs.

There's talk about real-time lighting algorithms to render, shadow casting
on a monsters skin and even a fluorescent light reflecting off the teeth of
    the chain saw.

Mention was made of Carmack creating an algorithm to reduce a 500,000
polygon character down to 2,000 polygons for the Level of Detail setting
when the same character is viewed at a distance.

Carmack says, Doom 3 won't be his last game engine, but don't expect a new
engine every few years like before.

    There you have it.
