Got Quake3 Questions?

Well, I think another Q3Test preview article would be a bit of overkill. However I got the OK from Graeme to go ahead and answer a few questions for you guys that you may have for the game (assuming I know the answer.. heh). Here is your chance, just slap a question in the comments and I'll compile up a bunch of them and answer what I can late this evening. Please try and read through everyone elses questions before posting your own to avoid repeats. Also be sure and check out my 1.09 preview from earlier to see if your question might have already been answered.

  • There seems to be a strange bug concerning the grappling hook and lightning gun in 1.08--I know the grapple is removed from give all, but you CAN still get it via edited servers and other stuff..so anyway, it\'s like this:

    Fire the grappling hook, and when it hits a wall, quickly switch to the lightning gun. You should be suspended in the air with the lightning trail still coming out of you. Now, fire the lightning gun at any point. you go flying along the shaft for a short distance. you move INCREDIBLY(sp?) fast and it won\'t go away until you use the grapple again or hit a jump pad. With this you can go just about anywhere and simply snipe to your heart\'s content--and if someone spots you, you can move quickly to another sniping spot and resume. It\'s kinda weird and I\'m surprised that no one seems to have figured this out before.

  • Here are some suggestions to make q3a, what i think, a better Deathmacth experience. So here goes:

    --as #51 said, accelerating rockets would be way cool. it would make it the best long range weapon, without making it the best shortrange. Great idea!

    --Please no footsteps in 1vs1, other gametypes doesnt matter. But in 1vs1 the game crawls

    --Make the rocket splash a bit larger. Maybe too powerful mixed with accelerating idea

    --Less weapon switching time, l

    --let the player define which weapon is better than the one being picked. The current autopickup sux bigtime

    --Give some air control dammit

    Maybe i\'ll come up with more later, dont remember right now

    yes the netcode sucks, could someone make that a question like:

    --Are you going to improve the netcode (significantly) [ i read something about the fact that it was not compressed in 1.08..]?

    --my roommate wants to know if you can use custom models and stuff...

    --CAN WE HAVE SOME BETTER TAUNTS? - i miss the crotch grab and the birdie animations from q2....

    btw guys i think seeing th lag you have with the lightning gun is better than not feeling it (as in ut.. it looks like you are hitting yuor target when you are not...)

    --Graeme, plz try unreal tournament and tell us how you think q3 will crush it.

    --what kinda of entities liek turrets and ladders will be included in the actual game (at least in code)?

    --will the HUD be similar to ut\'s in customizeability and structure?

  • #152: Try dropping your maxpackets to around 22 and rate to 2800. The defaults are 30 and 3000 respictively when you choose modem in the game options.

    Experiment with it until you find your systems sweet spot. It\'s a little different for everybody. The above settings work best for me. When you lag out like that you can even drop the console and lower it even further and it will come back to life after a minute or so. Then you can put it back to whatever usually works best.

    Life on a modem sucks. There\'s really not a whole lot id can do to fix the problems that come with such a shitty way to connect to the net. Games stress your net connection harder than anything so a good deal of tweaking is almost always needed.

    Some of the things have been improved. JC already mentioned the sticking players bug has been fixed, the lag on some of the weapons has been reduced and I THINK I remember seeing something about weapon and item pick up being put on the server side so no more false pick ups.



  • I know the following questions have been asked, but I want to ask them again to try to get a point across:

    1. Has anything been done about the netcode, I mean c\'mon I hear the armor sound, yet pick it up only about 50% of the time; sometimes I will be shooting someone right in front of me, then they somehow pull a Matrix-like move and killed me from behind??? I am also saying you need to check Q3 on a Zoom modem, it just doesn\'t mixx, I heard this from somone on irc and tried it and got the same results... also I get this inevitable phone jack after about five minutes of play, its almost like the server just jammes and stops sending/recieving, yet I still see everyone else run around. I thought it was my modem - no it wasn\'t, I get 140 pings in QW and about 170 in Q2, 200 in EQ and rarely ever phone jack, yet in Q3 it does it everytime non-fail after about 5 minutes, so I have to TAB\\ALT out of the game, and open up the web browser, and type in a sit, hit enter and then stop, just to get the connection to work again in Q3, I dont wanna have to do this in a clan game or in a 1v1..... Im still waiting to see this highly advanced netcode.

    2. Is the current lightning gun a joke? On server side, it already laggs worse than the equivalent of a 200 ping in QW, so LPBs are now having to aim like hpbs in qw, and use hpbs in q3... we cant even use it, and for some reason when I fire it, the shit err shaft shoots from my side, wtf? I wasnt looking over there.

    These two issues really need to be answered/addressed.
