Day of Defeat Retail
by Steve Gibson, Mar 31, 2003 2:21pm PSTThis is probably not a huge surprise in itself, Day of Defeat the mod for Half-Life will be coming out on retail shelves for about $30. The Counter-Strike retail release has seen some huge numbers, selling in the millions. What is interesting though is the publisher, it seems that Valve Software is now working with Activision instead of long time partner Sierra.
Enlist in an intense brand of action gameplay! Stationed in the heart of WWII's European theatre of war, join the ranks of a unique military squad. Missions are based on key historical operations, and as war rages, squads must battle as a unit to achieve victory.Despite how incredibly clever it is to lament over Valve Software on "omg repackage milk milk lol" stuff, is everyone here in agreement that when a mod team does something super cool, the retail release is the way to go? The guys working on Desert Combat for BF1942 are going that same route it seems. I'm all for it. If you make a product of professional level quality, you deserve some cash money.

3d realms, you listening ? Stop the teasing shit if you're not gonna deliver! :P
In any case I wonder if Duke Nukem Whenever was released today it would measure up to today's standards...
Just a thought...
This sucks balls though: "Mr. Newell figures that 75 percent of Valve's current customers already have broadband; he also estimates that Valve can realize a gross profit of $30 on a $50 title by releasing a game using Steam, compared with a gross profit of $7.50 by releasing a title through the retail channel with a game publisher. Steam will also be tightly controlled to cut down on game piracy."
Valve have an enormous blind-spot when it comes to "Steam". $50 and I provide the media? Thanks! Screw them, I buy my games on disk whatever the bandwidth.

Well, they showed interest for a while, and then they just abandoned us. Haha.

I just don't think DoD is anywhere near a professional level -- and I played it for a good 2 years, solid.
And don't even get me started on the mediocrity of Desert Combat (UUUGH). What exactly HAVE they done with that mod that is so special? People keep comparing it to CS, but it's nothing but replaced models and sounds (the new ones being of the shitmost quality), whereas CS and DoD were complete departures from the stock Half-Life DM experience.

Anyhoo- Congrats to the DoD team. That game is awesome, and they deserve much credit and cash.

Whatever. In any case, I thought Valve was working wholly eliminating the middle man with their STEAM stuff.
And speaking of which, whatever happened to CS 1.6? It's been like 3 months since their failed 1st try with that.

Well sure - I think this is going to create increased effort and interest in the mod community - the potential to have your mod "make it" is increased if it becomes more common for publishers and original game developers to make that possible - which I would think would make a person try that much harder to get their mod right, make it original, and all that stuff that makes for better mods. the majority of mods wont get to that level, but they will still be there for the folks who pooh pooh the idear of a retail addon and keep their money in their mattresses.
