Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Mar 29, 2003 5:33pm PSTSo the chick and I were checking out The Core last night, and if you work really hard on forgetting any type of scientific reason it was fairly entertaining. You gotta concentrate pretty hard though, and the chick almost jumped out of her chair a couple of times after seeing a couple of outstandingly confounding scenes. Sadly though, about 80 minutes into the movie a fire alarm went off so we were robbed of what I'm sure was a beautiful ending.

I mean a high-level document processor, not low-level layout programs (like MS Word for instance). I don't want to tell the program how my document is supposed to look, I want to tell it what the various parts of the document is, and then have the program create a nice and uniform layout of the document automatically.
I really like LyX for Unix but it's a real hassle to get working under Windows, so I'm looking for something similar.

Any advice from the Shack Collective? Stuff to see, remember, not forget, etc... I'm planning sampling a few wines, though that's not kosher at the school I go to.
Gonna take my iPod and my digital camera (already got int'l chargers). I think $300 cash will cover spending money (it's one of those planned trips through a tour company, so the other expenses are taken care of). I plan on keeping it in US, shouldn't be too hard to change into pounds @ London and euros in Paris/Italy.
I also thought I'd take sleeping pills for (at least part of) the flight over. Yea or Nay? (Staying awake for 8 hours doesn't sound too exciting.)

in light of this - http://slashdot.org/articles/03/03/28/2220247.shtml?tid=201
microsoft has acknowledged the problem, and there is a patch, but they're not planning to make it public until service pack 2. you have to call their support line and do all kinds of backflips to get it *now*.
luckily some kind slashdotter did that and posted the hotfix, and i downloaded and installed it, and it helped a LOT. bf1942 loads much quicker now, and i can alt-tab out at will with no problems or slowdown. highly recommend anybody with XP SP1 install this patch. i'll post the verified virus-free .exe on my shackspace if you guys don't like downloading from somebody else's server.

i upgraded my system from a abit kr7a-raid VIA based motherboard to a Asus A7N8X Deluxe with 1 meg of PC-2700 CRUCIAL. I kept my xp1900, so all i changed was motherboard and ram.
well i switched out the motherboard and ram and on first bootup the machine never posted. so after a few hours i figured out that the problem was there was too much artic silver on the cpu. so i scraped most of it off and it posted fine.
NOW though, while installing windows xp professional, it will randomly lock up, very early in the process. sometimes the system will just shutdown completely like i turned the power off.
i have tried it with every combination i can think of. all 3 of my harddrives seperate, with 1 stick of ram, with the ram in different slots, NOTHING else is plugged in except video card, yet it still locks up or resets while installing xp. it's not the xp cd either. there are no scratches on it.
anyone have any ideas? i have pretty much narrowed it down to the CPU overheating, even though i have good cooling(maybe i took too much artic silver off?), bad power supply or not enough power, or faulty motherboard.

The allies were being attacked heavily and the apache crew was fighting off four different enemy attacks at once. One of the enemys had build a particle canon and was set to go in one minute. The allies had two minutes until their canons would be ready to fire. If that particle canon would have been fired, it would have spelled DOOM for the allies. So, the brave crew of the 1st aurora bomber squad volunteered to take out the power. After one fuel air bomb and one a-10 strike, they still had enough power to activate the canon. So, with one power plant caught on spy radar, the bomber crew had tone and went for it. All four birds and their crew were lost. However, power was shut down for well over a minute. This gave the allies enough time to activate two Particle Uplink canons of their own and destroy the rouge WMD.
Truely brave men and women were in those planes and they shall continue to fly over us forever...

Now with Wind Waker it seems like you are always told where to go next and there always seems to be a character saying something like "WTF are you doing wasting time we need to get to the next plot point!" Does this game ever reach a point where you decide where you are going to explore and not have to worry about someone naggin you to hurry the fuck up and go?

Also, I asked Silent Wolf to help me admin it when I'm not around. He agreed, so he has the passwords and can make changes to it as well.

what do you do when you're the last person alive and there's still a lot of T's left?
I usually abandon any pretense of sneaking (heh not like I'm all that good at it anyway) and charge through until I die, some people just gren themselves
ppl that sneak around for 8mins trying to kill 20 T's tend to annoy me, its not like we're keeping score.....go play SP or something :)
