Game Sales & Desert Combat

Well here's something a lot of people have probably been expecting... With current events as they are, a few of the military combat based games out there in the gaming industry are seeing a bit of a sales spike. In addition to that though, some ominous words from the developers of Desert Combat which is currently a free mod for BF1942:

"We've been approached by multiple publishers to try and sell it," said DeLise, "so it's probably not going to be a mod for long. It'll be more of an expansion pack."

"While its WAY to early to see if DC will every make it to the shelves, we promise to do everything in our power to do the right thing for the gamers, My goal would be to do what CS has done, free download, pay for the box.

At this point, I really wouldn't worry about anything, for now you will get lots of free toys to play with for the forseable future.

Um, am I mistaken, or can Desert Combat NOT LEGALY BE SOLD to anyone besides EA, at least in it's current form? I haven't actually read the licence agreements, but I would think that the mod isn't re-sellable.

I get the impression that the DC developers aren't being 100% honest with this post, I wonder what company they're trying to trick...

I enjoy Desert Combat immensely. I'd pay 19.95 for a DC expansion pack, if they:

1. Doubled the number of vehicles
2. Made a minimum of 5 custom maps for it
2a. Made 1 or 2 smaller maps for 6-8 player clan matches
3. Added better controls to the server to facilitate clan match play
4. Used Dices' internal SDK to code missiles that actually track, and added a few extra "high tech" features to vehicles. At present it's hokey in many areas.
5. Pay arabic voice talent to get rid of the German speaking Iraqi's
6. Fix a million balance issues. Ok, so technologically speaking, the coalition equipment is 4x better. But still, there are some balance problems.

$20. No more. Sell it online securely through Steam, or some other content delivery service. No box, no CD, keep costs down. I don't want to drive anywhere to get it, I want to sit on my ass with my feet up drinking coffee listening to MP3's while my DSL sucks every last bit of DC goodness down the pipe.

Haha what? DC is an amatuerish mod, no one is going to pay for that. Codename Eagle is 100x what DC is and they even made their own maps in CE! That's professional work right there.

that sucks because it's not that much of a mod, MUCH LESS an expansion pack.

It's just a few models, some weapons tweaking (numbers in an ini file or something, stashed away somewhere) and that's it.

They dont even have their own maps. Big deal.

Earth to the desert combat team: we hate this kind of shit. See road to rome or the upcoming retarded expansion for bf1942. 4 new maps, some reskinned soldiers and 4 new models for new tanks or jeeps.

WOW. Lame.

I'd like to see this go the CS route. Who's to say that the cs team didn't make money, but any saavy individual can d/l CS online for free, as long as they own HL. So we'll get a lot more newbies (me included) who buy the expansion pack because its on store shelves, while we get a great mod for basically free.

this could be good for the DC team, this will get them the tools and source code that they need. now it won't just be a vehicle mod, but this will give the the possibility of doing guided bombs, heat seaking missles, and maps as big as texas.

though i was looking forward to playing this for free, im glad they are getting something for their hard work.

i really hope there is some way they can do business with someone other than EA.

So let me get this straight, DC is the king shit while it's a free mod, but as soon as it's going to get some publisher money behind it the mod becomes a piece of crap with "just some new models and numbers changed in a .ini file." I don't even know how to explain how that happens.

Personally I'm happy for them, they made some quality stuff there, no it isn't perfect, but what do you expect from programmers working in their spare time? Next thing you know people will start expecting all these part time unpaid coders to produce a whole damn operating system complete with GUI tools, a robust file system, and a suite of excelent databases and servers. I mean jesus, you people demand too much from folks working for free.

Bascially he says he forsees something similar to what CS did with HL...free if you bought the original, or paid for separately. Even that wouldn't be for some time it seems. I am all for mod makers getting some cash for their work. I just hope that they are smart, and allow people who already have bf to continue to play DC for free like they did for cs. I dont see this happening, considering road to rome though. Which isnt smart, as it just segments your userbase. It wont stay popular, or ever reach the popularty/userbase numbers of HL/cs/etc

Congrats to the DC team. If it were me personally, I think I would tell EA or whoever "not interested right now", just to keep it free to the community and be able to let my team and I take the game where we want it, not where the pricks @ EA want it to go. They've all already secured their "in" to a job in the gaming industry because this mod and this offer is proof, but I'm not sure I'd sell it to EA so quickly. Make them beg =)

Good for the DC guys! It's a fabulous mod, and they deserve full credit and recognition for it... and if they get to laugh all the way to the bank that's great too.

I only hope it won't slow the progress of the mod down.. but I *do* hope this will mean whoever takes the mod over will make larger maps for it. Some of the smaller maps (like Kharkov, etc) are waaay too tiny for the A-10, etc.

If you think .2 was cool and you have Usenet and want a little preview of MUCH awesomer stuff, you can get leaks of .3h. I'll be sad if this mod goes commercial because of how long it will take before we get our hands on all this cool new stuff out in the open.. but I'll definitely buy it.

Hell its probably worth more than I paid for R2R as it is :)
