A Friday surprise from Electronic Arts, as they have just released a new free level for Battlefield 1942 called Operation Aberdeen. If you run a server there is this file which will allow you to run this new map. Here's a description of the level.

Operation Aberdeen is the latest free map from DICE. It is an all armor battle set in the desert. There are 5 points to capture, and players will need to secure both outposts, and the area around the central town to ensure victory.

  • it's nice, i was expecting a larger map, but it's really more small/medium. map layout:

there's 3 horizontal bases in the middle of the map, and then 4 more (basically) at the 4 corners. teams start in opposite corners, SW and NE. there's probably a dozen tanks at startup, one stationary and one mobile artillery cannon, and a bunch of bunkers for final defense. oh yeah, the home base looks to be cappable.

it's pretty crazy; i was getting shot from all sides. you forget how tunnel-visioned the tanks are. it's easy to get blindsided since the whole map is relatively flat and everyone is in a tank. i forsee a lot of anti-tank personnel, engineers (maybe, the tanks are too powerful against each other) and a single scout just for spotting. you can see most of the map from the non-starting corner points. don't know about allied, but the axis side corner has a tower, so scouting will be easier.

i can easily see how real teamwork is going to be crucial to prevent getting flanked. oh, and the cap points are tiny around the flags.
