Late Night Consoling

by jason bergman, Mar 10, 2003 8:00pm PST

I had originally planned on debunking this story from Bloomberg (that'd be the news outlet, not the mayor of NYC) that claimed the PlayStation 3 would be out this year, but as Slashdot reported earlier today, it's already been denied by Sony, so that's not really necessary I guess. But I'll do it anyway, since I have nothing else to write about tonight besides this plug for GamingFM I promised to do (check 'em out if you're into gaming soundtracks...it's good stuff). If nothing else, the one reason for the PS3 not being released this year is simply that there aren't any games for the thing yet. And given how complex this hardware sounds, it's going to be a long time before that's possible. Backward compatibility is great, but Sony's not stupid enough to release a major upgrade without providing a sufficient launch library to go along with it. So relax. The PS3 is gonna happen, but probably not until mid next year at the absolute earliest, and probably later than that.

PS2 Onimusha Madness Capcom today announced two new Onimusha titles. There's the inevitable Onimusha 3 (trailer at GameSpot), which seems to be a big departure from the last two, and has The Professional himself Jean Reno as the model for one of the characters. And then there's Onimusha Buraiden, which is a fighting game expansion of the franchise.
PS2 Xbox GameSpot Previews GameSpot has posted separate-but-identical previews of X2: Wolverine's Revenge for the PS2 and Xbox, as well as an updated look at the PS2 port of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell.
GameCube GameCube Delays IGN is reporting that Nintendo has pushed back F-Zero and Wario World. F-Zero will now be released on August 25th, while Wario World is now slated for release on June 23rd.
GameBoy Advance New MK GBA Midway has announced that they are working on a sequel to Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance for GBA. This is purely a sequel to the MKDA for GBA, and is not part of a multi-platform sequel that may or may not be in development as well.
PS2 Kingdom Hearts 2? Rumors are circulating that Kingdom Hearts 2 is in development. Really. This is such an anti-news story (up next: Final Fantasy XIII may be in development!!!) that rest assured that if it weren't totally dead tonight, I wouldn't be running it at all.
Xbox Big World Update GameSpot has posted an update on the Big World engine, which is being used for an unspecified massively multiplayer title in development at Microsoft.
GameCube PS2 Xbox Goblin Commander: Unleash the Horde Announced Jaleco has announced Goblin Commander: Unleash the Horde, an RTS headed up by Ron and Chris Millar, two former Blizzard designers who have worked on StarCraft, WarCraft and Diablo, which should be a fine enough pedigree to let us forget about the supremely dorky name.
GameCube PS2 Xbox Misc. Media IGN has posted a new preview of Resident Evil: Dead Aim, which promises not to suck like Gun Survivor did, as well as new movies showing off Brute Force and some shots they say are from RTX Red Rock for GameCube, although LucasArts' site no longer lists a GameCube version, and it's disappeared from most online retailers' lists. And lastly, the official Crimson Skies site has been updated with a new installment of "Air Action Weekly" (thanks PlanetXbox).
Console Game of the Evening: Solaris for the Atari 2600. "Outstanding, ahead of their time graphics, and a sweet combination of strategy/planning and action. Plus, it took a while to beat, thanks to its 15 quadrants with random scenarios changing in realtime. All hail D.Neubauer." (submitted by FoX3D).
