ATI Launches Radeon 9800
by Maarten Goldstein, Mar 06, 2003 7:21am PSTATI has unveiled their latest Radeon videocards today, improving on the successful Radeon 9700 Pro. The high end Radeon 9800 and Radeon 9800 Pro videocards will start shipping this month, Radeon 9600 (Pro) videocards by mid-April and for people with a more limited budget the Radeon 9200 (Pro) cards which will ship in April as well. Reviews of the Radeon 9800 Pro card can be found at HardOCP, AnandTech, Tech Report, Beyond 3D, Hexus and UK Gamer. Here's part of Anand's conclusion
More than just a higher clocked Radeon 9700, the Radeon 9800 Pro doesn't cease to impress because of the minor but potent improvements ATI made to the R350 core. Definitely a pleasant surprise, ATI has produced a worthy interim successor to the Radeon 9700 Pro. If you want the best out today, look no further than the Radeon 9800 Pro; it's quiet, faster, occupies a single slot, and will enjoy much wider availability than the GeForce FX.

It would be hillarious to see ATI's 9800 PRO arrive on the shelves before the FX. That would mean 2 x paper launch ass by nVidia.
Thing looks like a rapist...

So theres the 9800pro- top o the line, .15 process -- FAST
9700pro- been out for a bit, still very fast, coming down in price, .15 process
Now we have the 9600pro based off of r350, .13 process, is this faster than the 9700pro? whats the difference? If it is, why couldn't they name it 9750pro, or 9700pro II ??
Anyone?

"NVIDIA will not have a chance to respond to the Radeon 9800 Pro for another couple of months, with their NV35 part. NVIDIA has NV35 up and running and it is already significantly better than the lackluster NV30"

Oh yeah, they know what they doing. Whoever has the fastest card out when Doom 3 comes out = the winnar. And if one card in particular is optimized for something that Doom 3 uses a lot of, like stencil shadow volumes, then it will only help them more.
I hope nVidia has something up their sleeves that will be ready in time for Doom 3. My 9700 pro is great for now, but more competition = lower prices all around.

Then again, one company would set the standard, and the other would do some gay 40+ gbps rating.
That plus a clock bump helps make the card better than any Nvidia product refresh I remeber (ie GF3-GF3Ti, GF2-GF2 Ultra)
