It's official -- "Star Wars" has created almost 400,000 Jedis in Britain. Over 390,000 people wrote "Jedi" on their 2001 census form, more than those who registered their faith as Jewish, Buddhist or Sikh in the optional question on religion, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said on Thursday. The Jedis declared their belief after a campaign on the Internet asked people to "do it because you love Star Wars" or "just to annoy people."

Here's the what-if: What if broadband becomes so common and piracy becomes so easy (Kazaa) that the random Johnny Lunchbox on the street can do it, no sweat? What if people just stop bothering to buy anything they can download?
Here's the fact of the matter: there are only a few reasons why most software pirates steal:
1) it's not stealing a physical product, so it's not true theft, but a copyright violation 2) they can't get caught or punished for it, really
3) a lot of retail prices are absurd
4) it's easy
Now, since most people who pirate stuff (that girl in rosewood's example) aren't going to be busting into Best Buy with an uzi and stealing shit off the shelf, how can you stop it?
Well...
There are three things that every pirate is pretty much going to HAVE to pay for. No real way around these:
1) electricity
2) your ISP/internet connection
3) the hardware that you use to connect to the internet and pirate shit
Maybe the only real solution is for the producers of music, movies, software, and games to all get into the hardware business and do all their software for free, producing it for more or less nothing. Basically, in the same way that drivers for video cards are free now, Nvidia would have a division that produced games for their 3d card as well. These games would just come as part of the hardware package. In a sense, all the content creators get into the hardware business, agree to jack up the prices on hardware, and just give away all their software for free.
It'd require an insane amount of consolidation of companies, and it's probably not do-able just because we know that with intense competition hardware doesn't make a lot of money (and software is fucking expensive to make), but honestly, I don't know if there's any other way to defeat the casual piracy bug (it's getting worse every day--at some point it is going to be putting people out of business).
Thoughts?

Stardock released a new ObjectDock version a few days ago, that dramatically reduced the RAM usage. With 18 icons on the dock-bar, it's only using ~6MB RAM, compared to 16-18MB with the previous version. The new version is availiable at http://www.objectdock.com
(PS: For those who tried it and found it to run rather slow, try using the Magnification Mode #2)
For those not in the know, this is an OSX-style menu bar that is too cool. Very worth a look ( http://timm.mine.nu/desktop.jpg , http://timm.mine.nu/desktop2.jpg and http://timm.mine.nu/desktop3.jpg shows it off)

Every Maxtor i had broke after a few months (sometimes i had it nearly a year...wow).
There is always the same sympton before they die and that is that it doesn`t start to spin when you turn on the pc in the morning. after a few reboots it works but after one or two months it`s dead. the only good thing about maxtor is the warranty exchange system: they send you a new disk via dhl or something and after you get it you send them your broken one back.
so last week my 3 month old maxtor showed the symptons again and i thought i`ll fill out an rma right away and not wait any longer. last monday i got the new disk, and copied all the stuff to the new one and formatted the broken one with partition magic.
and guess what: today the disk died. i can`t fucking believe it. i was playing splinter cell and suddenly i heard this strange rhythmic noise from my box and then the comp crashed. now when i boot the system the bios doesn`t recognise the disk and it still makes this strange rhythmic noises.
now all my mp3s and the whole stuff is fucking gone.
is there a way to unformat the old one or something? theoretically i think it should be possible but i don`t know how i could do it....
pls help me almighty shack...

Grow big (like, 15feet / 5m tall) men and put them on every 2nd street corner (hidden inside an alley). Then, when something bad happens 3 closest big men starts chasing criminals and yelling at them, throwing rocks, and spitting. THey're also bullet proof. They do this for maybe 30 minutes and then call the cops. While waiting these big men may take a dump on crimilans head, but that's their choice.
What do you think?
