Alice Uncovered!

by Steve Gibson, Oct 30, 1999 11:49pm PDT

Well, it looks like the Alice website has finally gotten a redesign offering a bit more info on the Quake3 engine freaky fairytale game. The only images of the game I could dig up is this image of Alice, this in-engine shot that I scaled up, and a couple of windows backgrounds: [image1] [image2]. Here are the game details I got for ya:

When Alice responds to a mysterious summons to return to Wonderland, the place is barely recognizable. Something has gone very wrong. Undaunted by the diseased atmosphere, confusion, and mortal danger that surrounds her, Alice commits to set it right. Equipped with her courage, a keen appetite for the bizarre, and a lethal array of transmogrified toys, she'll penetrate enemy stongholds, confront the forces of evil, and put the wicked Queen of Hearts in her proper place. ... Based on Quake III engine technology , 3rd-person 3D action , An array of nasty toys , Vicious creatures , Horrifying environments , Strange characters , Devious puzzles , Over a dozen strangely familiar locations
Also, the Alice Webring has a Q&A with one of the developers from Rogue Entertainment although it doesnt offer any game info.

  • Half-Life was cool at first. I thought it was kickass to talk to all the guards and scientists at the beginning. The guy who said that Gordon had mail, but the server was down, I just FLIPPED! He was banging the keyboard and shit. But then, about 2/3 of the guys would say \"Hello Gordon\"... \"I\'m terribly busy\"... Basically, Valve didn\'t want to spend the time making up dialogue...

Xen sucked so much serious ass-
    1) Jump around on the rocks
    2) Shoot the bad guys
    3) Figure out how to destroy the spider thing
    4) Destroy the spider thing
    5) Find the big yellow-ish thing
    6) Try to destroy the big yellowish thing
    7) Slowly learn not to get hit by the green balls, and that you have to shoot the yellow spikes
    8) Figure out how to kill the yellow-ish thing
    9) Kill it
    10) Try to stop your suicidal feelings when the game ends in the WORST way I\'ve ever seen...

    Yes, both endings sucked BAD...

  • Sorry to break the bandwagon for half life, but it is fairly common knowledge that the game, while being one of the best first person shooter games ever, was crap when compared with the best of damn near every other genre. If all you play are FPS games, then yes, you should be mindlessly jerking off to it (as appears to be the case)

However, if you\'ve played just about any other game, you\'ll see that Half life is the same FPS crap, with just a slightly better \"intro\". It still reverts into the old find the key, press the button crap. And if you try to deny that, then you are seriously on crack.

And don\'t even get me started on the ending.

The fact of the matter is, the game is not immersive, and quite frankly isn\'t that good when you compare it against the best other genres have (Fallout anyone? System Shock 1 and 2, Starcraft, AOE2, etc...)

I will freely admit it is the best SINGLE player FPS game released, but is far from the best game, not even in the same class.

  • uhh, im admitting that I\'ve never bothered playing it ??
either you are retarded, or just being annoying on purpose.
let me try to explain it again, since you obviously didnt get it the first time.

I\'ve played the entire game. The first 1/4th part was interesting. It had some new elements and was very well done. Then it started to decay into the same old stuff. And by the time i got to the Xen levels, it was utter crap and completely boring. The so-called story sort of existed in the first 1/3rd of the game or so. But there wasnt any relevancy to anything after that. Just stuff thrown together in the hope that the momentum built up in the start would carry it through to the end.

So please try to get it through your retarded skull that it doesnt automatically mean that i havent played it entirely if im not its bandwagon.

Speaking of local law enforcment authorities, anybody notice how well armed these guys are these days? Friggin no gang member having North Dakota Fuzz pull out AR-15s (M-16s) and full body armor for a disgruntled guy who just wanted to shoot himself.

Last thing I saw - they\'ve got this robotic rifle thing now, cops sits back, drinks his coffee, eats his donuts, then pops a few caps into some unsuspecting teenagers who were J-walking.

I don\'t have anything against cops in general, but they get alittle too carried away with themselves and how important they think they are. A police force, \"to serve and protect,\" should not be better equiped than the military. What\'s that saying... \"power corrupts?\"

  • Take out the smooth level transitions and the so-called immersive game design of the Half-life goes out the window. I agree with #18 that the first quarter was very interesting, but it decayed rapidly after that.
If you wanna play a scary and immersive game, try SystemShock2. Yes, there are some key elements in it, but it destroys HalfLife in terms of immersiveness. I was literally getting too scared to play it in the dark on many occasions :) . Perhaps it just isnt my cup of tea, but i just fail to see how those extremely stupid Xen maps could be called immersive.

As for Alice, im all for dark and twisted looking games. Hope they dont screw it up, cause the premise looks very promising.

    Half life immersive? EVERQUEST?

Sorry but half life is the same find this, press that crap, if not worse. The first 25% of the game (if that) is great, but from there it decays very rapidly into something that is basically Earth Quake2.

Half life is, I\'ll admit the most immersive FPS out there, but honestly that isn\'t saying much, and for decades, every other genre has had atleast as much depth as half life.

Everquest is about the most non-immersive game in existance. I mean, how does sitting and waiting exactly 19 minutes for a creature to magically appear, immerse me? The answer is that it doesn\'t. While the game is more immersive than UO, I\'d hardly call it a good example of immersion.

You really need to get out if those are the two most immersive games that you\'ve played.
