First Post!
by Maarten Goldstein, Feb 14, 2003 6:52am PSTI headed out to a local software store last night and they had plenty of C&C Generals copies, so I picked one up. So much for preordering. Digging the game so far though from what I've seen in reviews the single player campaign is unfortunately rather short. Also EA, please hire Frank Klepacki for the music again next time, thanks. Oh yeah, I wanna apologize for messing up that IGI2 demo on FileShack yesterday. For a while it was the first demo instead of the second demo, this wasn't fixed until later in the day. Sorry if you downloaded a 100+mb and got the same demo again. Movie: I am gravely disappointed. Again you have made me unleash my dogs of war.

I'm setting up a computer for my little cousin as his Christmas present. However, my aunt wants some kind of parental control software on it though, and I know absolutely nothing about it. Does anybody have any suggestions about this? I installed firefox without even thinking, but now it looks like none of the software I'm finding even works with it. I'm currently looking at Cybersitter 9.0, it looks to be half decent, but I can’t see any firefox support which leads me to believe there is none. If nobody has any suggestions to work with firefox I’d love to know some software that makes IE less crappy?

If you recall from this post: http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?id=6675032 , I was working on code that enables bots to process feedback from firing their weapons to assist their aiming. Or in the case of spread bullet weapons (eg. Machinegun), to mess up their aiming. The results have been really good. From spectating bots, I've noticed they definitly have shakier aim with the machinegun, much like players have. These changes required reworking maybe a quarter of the aim engine, however. And most of the convergence constants I made up off the top of my head. Basically, I'd like feedback with the bots aiming-- is it realistic or not? Are some bots at skill levels too good or too bad or aiming? What about for different weapons? There are a lot of new constants I can tweak based on your input.
Another important feature is the awareness engine. Basically, bots can hear your sounds (footsteps, jumps, weapon switching) and might notice you. The code was written before but a bug disabled it. Also, I added an occlusion estimation for bots. Bots will now estimate how occluded their targets and are more likely to notice targets that are less occluded. In other words, a bot is less likely to first see you if you are partially hidden behind a pillar. Of course, once a bot notices you, it will keep track of you as long as it can.
Please keep in mind that bots will STILL suck at picking up items. On the bright side, Item pickup is the only feature left. I'm hoping I can hammer the code out in a few weeks, which puts the source code release at sometime in March.
Here's the current algorithm problem I'm trying to solve for the item code. Suppose you have a list of different points 'P' in 3-space which is computed at start up (and never changes during the game). Many times during the game, a bot will need to look up the closest 'n' points in P which are closest to some previously unknown location 'x'. Note that 'n' is always fixed but reasonably large. Right now the best I can do is O(|P| log |P|)-- use quicksort to sort the list by distance and return the first n elements. When 'n' is small, it's easy to get a linear time solution.
The real question, however, is whether a sub-linear solution exists, especially when N is small. I know that if N is 1, I can use a BSP tree, but I don't think it works for N > 1. One idea I had was using the metric property ( dist(a,b) + dist(b,c) >= dist(a,c) ) to cull out large sets of points, but I haven't thought about it enough. Any input on this problem would be appreciated.
