Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Cancelled
by Maarten Goldstein, Feb 11, 2003 11:30am PSTSurprising news has just come in from Activision. The new Wolfenstein game Enemy Territory has been cancelled. Originally this was going to be a retail release with a single and multiplayer part. However, development of the singleplayer part wasn't turning out all that well it seems. The multiplayer part will still come out though, it will be released as a free downloadable expansion for Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
In Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory Axis and Allied teams do battle in traditional single scenarios, or wage war through a series of linked scenarios in a totally new campaign mode. During combat players gain experience and skill, and through battlefield promotions are awarded additional abilities that remain persistent across an entire campaign. Additionally, new character classes like the covert operative class as well as an enhanced engineer allow teams to perform reconnaissance, steal enemy uniforms, and construct battlefield structures and military installations in the midst of combat to gain tactical advantages for their team. All new game modes, maps and communication abilities require players and teams to develop advanced strategies and tactics in the struggle for front line domination.

second it´s similiaritys to fast shooters like q3 and ut in terms of agility and gameplay. i hate games where someone sitting under a tree gets the upper hand in sniping my while playing totally and utter crap when faced in a close quarter fight. maybe i grew old and am fixed to games like doom , q1 and so on but i´ll always give fast paced action the lead compared to crouching and sneaking.
while being faced paced and playable ( the rubbish movement left aside ) bf fails in being a balanced shooter. by making the planes even stronger since patch 1.3 it feels like ea rather wants to attract bomb-dropping noobs than making quality gameplay.
in my opinion infantry should be rewarded for killing opponents in such an demanding way of playing . but nooooo you´ll get pissed off by some flying kiddie who cant manage to turn 180° but carpets the whole map with bombs. balance ? i dont think so....
i really hope ea will get the hang on this and realize that bf only will survive with the attention of hardcore gamers devoting their time and effort, and not by the quick fun of some muenchhausens and richthofens.

I might actually play RTCW again - I did enjoy it until BF1942...
It's a shame it seems no one can nail down something that works without resorting to massively constraining the emergent properties of the multiplayer games they spawn from.
Hope publishers keep supporting ambition either way, I was looking forward to this one and others more than any plain script-o-story game on the horizon.

Average.
But a free MP addon is great news either way.
One player commands, vs the other players commander. Everyone else plays grunts, commander captures res nozzles (you could call em supply depots), and can build structures, like ammo depots, vehicle factories, medical facilities etc. Then he could upgrade stuff and buy stuff for his troops as they duke it out. Put down machine gun emplacements (that are controlled by an AI bot that has decent skill), call in air strikes (balance this so the enemy com can't rape an entire enemy team working together, but maybe kill 1 or 2 of them).
Think of the possibilities. I could imagine a mod like this happening for BF1942
