Unreal Exploit
by Steve Gibson, Feb 06, 2003 8:48am PSTA recently published report originally spotted by 3DGPU on the BugTraq listing has news of a vulnerability in Epic's Unreal engine that leaves machines open to participate in DDoS attacks and the popular spoofed UDP packets fun. The person who discovered the exploit privately notified Epic nearly 3 months ago which was a sweetheart thing of him to do. However Epic dropped the ball for a bit too long. Bluesnews has a quote and a fix list from Mark Rein on the subject:
I won't sugar coat this. We fucked up on this. Yes this is real and yes this was brought to our attention and yes we should have fixed it by now. We are working on fixing this now and we will have this fixed in an upcoming patch before too longThis exploit works on all Unreal/Unreal2/UT2003 engine based titles, and once Epic has the fix they will make it available to all licensees.

Unreal 2 sucks anyway, i never liked the series but it took away everything cool, new, and interesting from the first game. The graphics are great but Doom 3 will blow them away, it doesnt run that great, and NO MULTIPLAYER SUPPORT (who would want a game without this).
I played it quite a bit (and ordered a GF4 finally because it sux on my GF2 with low detail) but im sure ill go back to CS and Tribes 2 after a few hours anyway

The blunt, unattractive truth is much more appealing to me, and I appreciate hearing it even though I don't even play unreal. Kind of reminds me of Dave Georgeson from dynamix before that whole party got slaughtered.

Then yeah they fucked up on that.
On the other hand, at least Mark Rein had the balls to say "We fucked up", instead of trying to fabricate an excuse to hide behind. Anyone with common sense should respect that.
