Evening Reading
by Steve Gibson, Feb 01, 2003 4:00pm PSTBeen in computer surgery a lot longer than I had hoped to today, still not quite done and I'll probably end up having to do a hard drive wipe to really be happy so I guess that's on tomorrow's agenda. I've got an old friend in town this evening also, but you guys will be on my mind while I'm gone. I got this stuff just for you guys!

- FileShack integration. Since FileShack is such a cool service, we decided to add a FileShack browser directly in ASE. So whenever you need a game patch or a demo, just click on the shack icon in the toolbar!
That's pretty rico!

Over the last month, I've been tracking my spam volume. I've been dealing with the incoming spam (reporting via SpamCop) and marking down how much spam I receive per day.
I also did this for December as well.
Here's the graph: http://www.habber.net/spam-0103.jpg
Spam Stats
Total spam: 274
Average spam per day: 8.8
Highs: 17
Lows: 2
Worst days of the week for spam (most amount): Wednesday, Friday
Best day of the week for spam (least amount): Sunday
Speculations
Spammers are religious.
Reporting spam (at least through SpamCop) is pointless.
Conclusions
Reporting through SpamCop is time consuming. Each day I probably spent upwards of 5 minutes reporting my spam. It's far easier and faster to just permanently delete them.
SpamCop didn't have any effect on my spam volume, positive or negative. I didn't report any spam anywhere in December, and just ignored it while logging it, and received similar results.
Mail filters are also pointless. I did this in November. I was spending as much or more time adding new filters than I spent reporting spam to SpamCop. The spam changed sufficiently to pass the filters each day, and adding more broad filters would risk catching the few legitimate emails I do recieve.
Best recommendation at this point is to simply delete it. Pretend it doesn't exist. It's the fastest way, the easiest way, and unless you want to ditch all of your current emails and start fresh and only give out your new email account to trusted friends and family, it's also the best way.
If you do take that route, you're screwed anyhow, once your mom gives your email to your aunts and they begin sending you e-cards.
