Space Shuttle Disaster
by jason bergman, Feb 01, 2003 8:47am PSTWhile we don't post a lot of major mainstream news around here, every now and then we make exceptions, and this seems as good a time as any. For those who haven't heard yet, the Space Shuttle Columbia has "broken up" during descent over Texas. While search and rescue teams are out in full force, it is generally believed at this time that all seven members of the crew died during the incident, including the first Israeli astronaut. More information: CNN, Space.com, Washington Post, NY Times. Those in the Dallas Ft. Worth area are being advised not to go near any debris that may land...it may be extremely hazardous. President Bush is expected to make a formal statement soon.

"Iraqis Call Shuttle Disaster God's Vengeance
Sat February 1, 2003 02:08 PM ET
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Immediate popular reaction in Baghdad on Saturday to the loss of the U.S. space shuttle Columbia and its seven-member crew -- including the first Israeli in space -- was that its was God's retribution on Americans.
"We are happy that it broke up," government employee Abdul Jabbar al-Quraishi said.
"God wants to show that his might is greater than the Americans. They have encroached on our country. God is avenging us," he said.
Car mechanic Mohammed Jaber al-Tamini noted Israeli air force Colonel Ilan Ramon was among the dead when the shuttle broke up shortly before its return to earth.
"Israel launched an aggression on us when it raided our nuclear reactor without any reason (in 1981), now time has come and God has retaliated to their aggression," Tamini said."
to think that anyone could suggest their god would kill the shuttle for their vengeance is beyond ignorant arrogance.

A NASA consultant was on the radio tonight and said NASA once again borrowed spy satellites to look at the shuttle underside after launch this time. However in the interview today, they categorically denied it when asked the question directly.
I'm not big on raising theories .. but what would it hurt if they told us they knew something was wrong and they had to reenter anyway. It is obvious they don't carry EVA patchkits for the tiles so wtf? my 2 cents.

these comments may offend some people, but i dont think they are nuke worthy.
I feel bad for the people that lost their lives, it is a tragedy. I understand the magnitude as it was a space shuttle. I also heard that tomorrow ABC is cancelling their broadcast of the NHL allstar game because of it. I know many people here might say who cares its the NHL, but thats not the point. The point is is that they are cancelling something that a lot of people get enjoyment out of over this event. Think how many people lose their lives every day in car accidents, or random accidents. I think that is more a tragedy than a space shuttle blowing up. Does anyone think that my opinion is invalid that this is worse than I take it? It's not because I am a hockey fan, infact I wouldnt watch the ABC feed of any sports event, but its the point im trying to make. I feel its beyond stupid, make it news today and let people get back to resuming their lives. If this was terrorism or sabotage and whatnot, then maybe, just maybe it would be worth looking at a little closer, but its not, its a freak accident.
please dont nuke me :(

"I F-ING WARNED THEM.
I told them that the technicians and engineers were overworked. I told
them that there were too many managers and too many meetings and
"dog-and-pony"
shows. I told them that their senior "face time" play games, while they
spent all their time plotting how to give each other pay raises, and left
the guys on the floor to struggle day to day with obsolete and overpriced and
unqualified equipment, was going to result in another Challenger.
I was there for Challenger.
I saw the same exact conditions happening again. Overpaid, lazy,
irresponsible managers concerned solely with their climbing up their
ladders."

Regarding the challenger accident:
"If a reasonable launch schedule is to be maintained, engineering often cannot be done fast enough to keep up with the expectations of originally conservative certification criteria designed to guarantee a very safe vehicle. In these situations, subtly, and often with apparently logical arguments, the criteria are altered so that flights may still be certified in time. They therefore fly in a relatively unsafe condition, with a chance of failure of the order of a percent (it is difficult to be more accurate).
Official management, on the other hand, claims to believe the probability of failure is a thousand times less.(...)"
(so they figured they should launch in spite of the cold and temp. related problems with the o-rings)

Continuous budget cuts probably play a role here to.

***The above items, or the technology that made them possible, were invented for NASA and the Space Program. This is only a partial list, as literally THOUSANDS of Spinoff items are produced each year.
***The NASA budget is LESS THAN 1/10 of ONE PERCENT of the TOTAL federal Budget.
***For every dollar that NASA spends, we get 25 dollars back into the economy; the highest turn-a-round of a dollar of any company or organization in the World.
***Approximately 500,000 people in the United States work for NASA and it's subcontractors.
***12 Astronauts walked on the Moon, for one third of the amount of money that is spent by Americans each year, on Pizza.
*** Each year, video games take in enough quarters to finance 5 space missions to Jupiter and Saturn.
*** The yearly cost of the consumption of alcohol and tobacco products by Americans is approximately 4 times that of the space budget.
*****The cost of NASA and the space program is very little, while the rewards are gigantic.

Let the sweet fresh breezes heal me
As they rove around the girth
Of our lovely mother planet
Of the cool, green hills of Earth.
We rot in the moulds of Venus,
We retch at her tainted breath.
Foul are her flooded jungles,
Crawling with unclean death.
[ --- the harsh bright soil of Luna ---
--- Saturn's rainbow rings ---
--- the frozen night of Titan --- ]
We've tried each spinning space mote
And reckoned its true worth:
Take us back again to the homes of men
On the cool, green hills of Earth.
The arching sky is calling
Spacemen back to their trade.
ALL HANDS! STAND BY! FREE FALLING!
And the lights below us fade.
Out ride the sons of Terra,
Far drives the thundering jet,
Up leaps a race of Earthmen,
Out, far, and onward yet ---
We pray for one last landing
On the globe that gave us birth;
Let us rest our eyes on the friendly skies
And the cool, green hills of Earth.
- Robert A. Heinlein

This could either be the end for NASA or a huge boost. Not to sound soulless, but what it comes down to is money. The Government, Congress and the Senate will either realize that NASA needs funding to maintain safe transport to and from orbit or they will shut them down.

This seems to be the best way to do it because of the law of conversation of momemntum. A mass cannot accelerate without a mass of equal kinetic energy accelerating in the opposite direction.
The proposed nuclear engine is a good idea, and a step in the right direction though. Lets hope things like these stay in NASA's future.

1. I am a strong proponent of NASA and may the astronauts rest in peace. I thank and honor them for their courage and commitment to humanuty and exploration.
2. It baffles me how we are reliant on piecing together amateur home video and gathering debris in determining the cause of the destruction of a shuttle belonging to the world's leader in satellite imagery and data acquisition...Why doesn't NASA make every attempt to film the shuttle's critical re-entry stage with high resolution videography, from space and the earth's surface..? We should have known exactly what happened by 9:30am and start fixing it now. The video i have seen thus far isn't even as clear as Challenger's was. This hurts in 2003..Am I missing something???
