Well it's finally been decided, AMD will be launching their next-gen 64bit Hammer CPU, the Opteron in April. Along with that are a couple other CPU speeds mentioned in the following PR sent out by AMD this morning:

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 31, 2003 today announced that the worldwide introduction of its next-generation, 64-bit AMD Opteron(TM) processor for servers and workstations will take place on April 22 in New York City. AMD plans to follow up with the introduction of the AMD Athlon(TM) 64 processor for the desktop and mobile markets in September 2003. AMD also announced today that it will introduce the AMD Athlon XP processor 3000+ on February 10 and the AMD Athlon XP processor 3200+ in mid-2003. These processors, based on the core code-named "Barton," feature additional integrated cache memory for industry-leading performance. [snip]

  • I said it this morning but I might want to say again...

    Fuck Microsoft

For those not in the know... AMD got in the sack HEAVILY with Microsoft so that the preference for WinXP/.NET Server 2003 64 bit editions would be in the x86-64 camp. Well, it seems the core OS has been working fine for a while BUT drivers are a fucking mess. Come on, its Microsoft. They shouldn't have too much trouble getting companies to get drivers ready. I mean ... THEY ARE MICROSOFT. (Shameless OpenSource plug is that if it was OSS then it could be taken care of very quickly).

Well, Microsoft's fucking around is gonna cost my girl AMD. AMD took a lot of fan base support when they were an early adopter of TCPA and shit like that. In general AMD has been putting a lot of resources to being Microsoft friendly (Athlon XP). It seems so far it has just cost them. It looks like getting the server chip out there where the drivers are more controlled / you can bank on OSS is a GOOD move by AMD. I just am going to have to take the OMFG SEPTERMBER comments. Pfft.

Now what I dont get from a tech standpoint is since these procs run 32bit code fine and dandy, why not just release the fucker and let it stand on its 32bit legs? I guess AMD is fairly confident that 64bit is the shit and wants people to feel the real power? Shit if I know.
