No Unreal 2 Demo

Some dissapointing, yet not really all that unexpected, Unreal 2 demo news on Unreality today. The news being, Legend won't be creating one according to an Infogrames brand manager. Looks like we'll get another video and that's about it.

As much as we'd like to create a "true" demo, it's simply not possible. Legend have moved on to other projects and the production of a demo - even from already existing levels would require time and effort that we just don't have. It would then have to go through QA - another organization that is working on other projects and cannot dedicate time to a UII demo. It's all about the allocation of "assets".

  • Is it fair to say that I can get a good idea of the gameplay from watching those 4 german Unreal 2 videos from GamersHell.com?

I would consider myself an Unreal fanboy, in so much as I was floored by the first Unreal (bought it for Mac and PC), I enjoyed playing UT (thought never puchased it), bought UT2K3 (not bad, don't play it that often, but every once in a while) and I was excited about the prospects of Unreal 2.

However, after watching those GamersHell videos, the game just looked soooooo boring. I did crank the sound down because I don't understand german speak -- so I can't rate that part of the game -- but here are my observations:

    (1) There's a lot of walking around, that seems to just show off the scenery. That worked with the first Unreal: it was so much better than anything else at the time, and we'd never seen big environments like that. I personally *like* the shiny/bright/over colorful levels in the Unreal series. But walking around for 10 minutes just to get to a switch I can hit on an elevator, then walking around for 10 minutes more just doesn't cut it for unique gameplay anymore.

    (2) I *think* that the videos showed gameplay from the first few levels of the game, so I would expect the monsters/enemies to be fairly easy to kill at first. The enemies in this video were pushovers. Even the skaarj went down in a few seconds. <sigh>

    (3) Crappy framerates. I'd be curious to know what kind of machine ze Germanz were playing this game on. I saw a lot of bad framerates, even in close-quarter situations with only one enemy. That doesn't bode well for my 1.7ghz Athlon.

So I am still on the fence about buying this game. I am an impulse shopper. I can drop down $70-$80 Cdn. for a game on a whim, if I just happen to want a new game that day for something to try out.

But I am hoping it gets much, much better than what I have seen so far.
