Hey, a GFXX review!
by Sander Pilon, Jan 26, 2003 3:56pm PSTIt's already monday in some parts of the world and some NDA on GFFX reviews expired. (Or so I heard...) Anyway, the German folks at tecchannel posted a review of a GFFX Ultra 5800. It's in German, but the benchmark graphs speak for themselves. Various sites have the usual fanboy discussions going on about these results - B3D and NVNews. The GFXX 5800 Ultra (the reviewed card) will cost you EUR 659 (suggested retail price from terratec) - a 9700 PRO goes for about EUR 400.

2. No 16 x Anisotropic Filtering (like ATI), just 8 x
3. NOISE (check anand and tomshardware for soundfiles) is real bad
4. HEAT > the back of the card emits heat onto your CPU hsf. This will decrease overclocking abilities and increase instability
5. ATI's R350 is right around the corner (as are 9700 PRO pricecuts)
6. ATI's drivers are stable now. No issue anymore
7. 1 x AGP + 1 x PCI (maybe even 2 x PCI because the cooler needs space for cool air intake ) can be an issue (not for me though)
My conclusion: move along, nothing to see here.

Imagine when Unreal2 hits, that'll be fun to watch.
For the money a top video card costs I should have fuck all issues with CURRENT games. I could see older ones maybe.
/rings the ATI fanboy dinner bell.

That is pretty damned expensive for something that isn't a complete computer (minus monitor, of course). I built this entire PC for less than that! :-/

Hopefully the fact that they're running about even with a 6+ month old card (nearly an entire product cycle in the video card world) will sober them up and a really KICKASS product will come from them in the next year or two. 32-bit color... T&L, they used to be the "innovators"... and it felt SO MUCH like a shadow of 3dfx when they were talking about 256-bit bus being unnecessary. Time to do something big fuckfaces, or ATI will eat you for lunch.
Wonder who will step up and crush ATI when they fall back into their old ways?

Congratulations Nvidia, you hired people that worked for 3dfx!

Majority opinion: NV30 is DOA...
I can deal with noise because I'll probably water cool it but I would not deal with shitty results.
ATI wins 17 benches
Nvidia wins 11 benches.
I am sure there will be alot of spin doctoring by the reviewers but the truth is upon us. In brute force benches ATI wins with a subpar tech process running on a slower Mhz...
I'd say ATI delivered a knockout 6 months ago when they shipped 9700Pro, we just did not realize how badly Nvidia was losing to them.
Now we do.
9700Pro is down to $295 on newegg.com...

The inly issue that I've been fighting thus far is the search for some 'unknown' device with the AIW. I've got all the software installed and updated to the newest drivers, but the card still likes to find an 'unknown' device every time I boot up.
Aside from that though, it's all good. Oh yeah, it's also hellaciously fast.
you guys are slow, and then you post stuff that already has a link to the article?
nice!
its good to see you're on the ball!

i think they tweaked it up the design a bit after the 9700 was released, but mostly were waiting for the .13 yields to happen.
hopefully that will allow them to come out with a substantially faster card in less than 6 months.
So, to make a long story short, I am reluctantly sending the card back to Newegg. As much as I want to keep it, I just can't. :(

Oh well; blame it on the time spent designing the Xbox chip.

I'll wait to see the new ATI card's benchmarks but it SURE SEEMS like I'm switching from a 64meg ti4200 to an ATI r350.
Way too much hype for this product. All that stuff on nvidia.com makes the joke just seem more and more funny.

To add to that they only beat ati's "old" 9700 by only a small margin and they had like 4-6 months to work on this card. And look at the size of that cooling. Say what they like but its kindov pathetic, kindov reminds me of 3dfx's quad X2 prototype board (rampage I think)
