by Steve Gibson, Jan 23, 2003 7:37am PSTWoohoo! Yeah! Thursday! So after years of frustration it seems my silly little football team has made their way back to the Superbowl. It has been 19 years since their last visit that I can vaguely remember at best. It's really pretty strange to see them make it so far, I guess 19 years will do that though eh? In other groundbreaking news, I've switched back from an electric razor to oldschool cream/razor! I was pretty sure a lot of you guys were really curious about my shaving habits (or lack of) so that is indeed the latest. I still have a shadow no matter what though. Maybe I'll get that laser hair removal!? Hm... yeah I guess now is a good time for breakfast and goofy gaming stuff. Hang on to something, it's ok if you blush. movie: It's not the years, honey, it's the mileage.

"Tuesday morning on the radio on the way to work I was listening to Howard Stern. He had the three judges from American Idol on talking about the new season.
Then he has some girl come on and sing, and has them judge her. She wasn't bad, but they go off on that she's not that good and no where near Hollywood potential (which she wasn't).
Then they have some other guy come up. He says he's going to sing "Hero" the song from Spiderman. They asked how old he is, and he said he's 30. They said he's way to old to start a career, but let him sing anyway.
So he sings the first few lines of the song before they stop him. They say he sings "OK" but has no stage presence and did nothing to engage them at all. They said he had his eyes closed the whole time and basically was no where near the quality they are looking for.
Then, Howard Stern says "Sorry, but this isn't who we said it was. It's really the guy who sang that song for real!!"
It was so freaking funny. Hearing them try to backtrack and cover up. So Howard asks's how many singles of that song he sold, and he says 8 million. Just goes to show they can't really judge who will make it and who won't as easy as they make it seem they do on a TV show."

For now, I'm going to ignore complicated decisions like "try to move over on that ledge so you can aim down with a rocket launcher". I'm assuming the bot has three choices-- move closer, move further away, stay in the general area. Conceptually, there exists an "ideal range" of attack. For example, if a bot has a lightning gun, the ideal range is probably between 256 and 640 units (the max range is 768 units). For the railgun, the ideal range is 1024 units or more.
Now here's the catch. You can't let bots restrict their range to their current weapon. The bot using the railgun might want to charge in close so that their lightning gun is good. Yet being within 512 units is terrible for the lightning gun.
Incidently, it's worth noting that the concept weapons being good in some ranges and bad in others is only relative to the strengths of other weapons. In other words, one reason you want to stay far away with the railgun is that no other weapon is good from that range, so you are guaranteed to break even on power if you are far away. But the most efficient way of killing the opponent may still involve moving closer in. Conversely, if you have a lightning gun but your opponent has the shotgun, you'd rather stay between 512 and 768 units, so his shotgun will be less effective.
One of the hardest tactical parts of Quake 3 is creating a tactical situation that makes your opponent's weapon less effective, while simultaneously using the "right" weapon for that situation. If your opponent isn't paying attention, you can really catch him off guard. And worst case, he eats a 450ms penalty to switch weapons. If you can do this enough, the weapon switching times really add up.
But that said, just because your opponent has a shotgun doesn't mean you should stay far away-- what if your opponent is the flag carrier, or someone who is really hurt? In this situation, it's probably worth charging in, taking a few hits, and getting the kill.
My intuition says the goal is to maximize this value:
(points_for_killing_enemy * damage_bot_deals_per_second_with_any_weapon / enemy_health) /
(points_for_killing_bot * damage_enemy_deals_per_second_with_current_weapon / bot_health)
Compute that value for different attack zones (near, mid-range, far) that the bot can move to and select the optimal value. I might have to cheat on the "damage enemy deals per second" and use the bot's own estimate of how well it could damage someone from that position with its own aim.
Any thoughts on this?

My wife wants to get her breasts augmented (boob job) but she not sure how she wants them to turn out other than she does not want porn star titties, so two things:
1. Pics of your favorite boobs.
2. any stories of relevance (First person please) about having this done to you or your wife/significant other.

Saw Opeth at Jaxx here in Virginia on Tuesday night. They are AMAZING live. Absolutely perfect. Mikael Akerfeldt secured his place in my mind as a musical genius. He sings and growls perfectly live, all while playing his claw-hand chords and fucked up, offtime rhythms and melodies. Every standout part in every song is played by Akerfeldt himself; it seems like Peter Lindgren is just there to play the simple rhythms to fill the holes. An amazing show overall, I suggest you catch them if they come near you.
Setlist was (as I remember it): Leper Affinity, Advent, Deliverance, Bleak, The Drapery Falls, Godhead's Lament, A Fair Judgement, and then Demon of the Fall for an encore.

Sajak, the longtime host of "Wheel of Fortune," will add a Fox News Channel series to his schedule. "Pat Sajak Weekend" will air at 9 p.m. EST Sunday starting in the spring, Fox said Wednesday.
"I enjoy exercising my interviewing muscles and I look forward to having the chance to do that every weekend," Sajak said in a statement,
The program was described by Fox as an hourlong "celebrity- and newsmaker-driven talk show." A debut date was not announced.
Sajak has been with "Wheel of Fortune" for more than two decades. He's no stranger to talk shows: "The Pat Sajak Show," a late-night CBS series, debuted in 1989 and was canceled 15 months later because of low ratings.
