A couple of bits of news from Gathering of Developers. First off KISS: Psycho Circus will be released around March of 2000. The screenshots were surprisingly impressive. (Telefragged had a KISS interview btw)Secondly, TRI, the guys behind Nocturne will be developing a game based on the Blair Witch Project movie. They will be using a modified Nocturne engine. Thanks Billy for that one.

  • I don\'t think the movie was really meant to be scary or anything. I think it was just focusing on a person\'s reaction when placed in that situation. That\'s why I like the movie, it actually seems very real. When placed in that situation, and going through everything though characters went through in the movie, almost everybody would react the same way. If this had been a typical \"Hollywood\" movie, it would have been the easily-frightened person who needs help with everything, the hero, and the hero\'s love interest. And I\'m glad it wasn\'t like that at all. And #62, I thought it was funny as hell too. I think if you take a step back and look at the big picture, human nature can be quite hilarious. I think that\'s what the focus of this movie was, not to scare people.

  • Didn\'t any of you notice that the movie was funny as hell? Seriously I laughed my ass off when I saw it and it\'s not because I have a sick sense of humor. I work at Blockbuster and when I am asked about the movie I tell people it should have been labelled as a comedy. Almost EVERYONE I have told that to has come back and said they liked it. I think most of you went in thinking you\'d get the piss scared out of you and you didn\'t like it because it didn\'t happen. It was all the hype that told you it was \"the scariest movie ever\" that made you hate it. I mean I know that\'s not the case for everyone and since you\'re all stupid you wouldn\'t admit it even if it was. I saw it before all the hype started but I also live 10 minutes away from where it takes place so I knew it was fake from the beginning. The fact that people thought it was real until they were told otherwise just makes it a better movie because that\'s what it wanted to accomplish. It\'s just like people who go to a comedy movie that is really stupid and say that it was a bad movie even though they laughed their ass off. It\'s a comedy and it made you laugh. Isn\'t that what a comedy is supposed to do? It might have sucked but if it did what it was supposed to it\'s not a bad movie. And for you dumbasses who think you have an opinion of the movie even though you haven\'t seen it... fuck off. You might have an opinion about the hype but that\'s not worth a damn thing. Go see the movie (which of course you\'ll hate because you are expecting it to be stupid) and then let us all know how bad it was. Jesus christ...

  • I can say this much about The Blair Witch Project:

I thought the movie was pretty good. Nothing great, but it wasn\'t a steamy log of crap either. It didn\'t scare me in the slightest though, and I don\'t see it as the kind of movie that I could enjoy watching more than once.

As far as the game goes, I see absolutely no premise here. Whereas you can take a film like Starwars and have a multitude of choices in game action, Blair Witch seems devoid of any such concepts. In this case it is certainly fair to judge the game before it is out, because we are basing our opinions on the premise. I could tell you right now that a game based on a cooking television show would suck horribly, just as a Blair Witch game would. Why? Because neither offer any hint of interesting gameplay in the conventional sense. Blair Witch Project was all about atmosphere, and was pretty much devoid of any action that could be translated into gameplay, much less GOOD gameplay. What will the game consist of, arguing with other players about who lost the map while shakycam provides the entertainment?

The bottom line: I am not interested in this game. Go ahead and make it, I don\'t care, but I\'m not going to buy it or download a demo or anything unless they make something from nothing and come up with good gameplay. If they\'re sticking to the movie, this is prettymuch impossible...

  • Here\'s a little tidbit for anyone that visited WWW.BLAIRWITCH.COM and was surprised to find out later that the whole thing was a hoax. In the \"Mythology\" section, are the following two entries:

10/26/94: The Maryland State Police launch their search of the Black Hills area, an operation that lasts ten days and includes up to one hundred men aided by dogs, helicopters, and even a fly over by a Department of Defense Satellite.

11/5/94: The search is called off after 33,000 man hours fail to find a trace of the filmmakers or any of their gear. Heather\'s mother, Angie Donahue, begins an exhaustive personal search for her daughter and her two companions.

Now.... let\'s do a little math here... 10/26 to 11/5 is 10 days, right? And \"...up to 100 men\" were involved? Even assuming that all 100 men were involved from the very beginning, searching for 10 days, to total \"...33,000 man hours\" would mean that each of the 100 men worked 33 hours per day...

That being said, I think that the marketing campaign was one of the most clever I can recall. Most movies even close to this genre are automatically assumed to be fictional by the audience, I think. The fact that the marketing department got anyone to think for a minute that it might be a true story is truly a tribute to their efforts and planning.

As for the movie itself, I unfortunately knew it was just a movie before I saw it - I was I had thought it was real, it would have been a much better experience. As it was, I found myself wondering how far away the camera crew, trailers, and cafeteria were from the scene I was watching (it turns out a loooong ways away), and that detracted somewhat from my suspension of disbelief.

A great movie? No, I don\'t think so. Good, perhaps, but not great.

Clever and original concept? Absolutely - one of the most original things I have seen in the theatre in a long, long time - and that\'s worth a little something, I guess.

  • wah!
sure, too many people fall into the \"what\'s trendy is good\" category.
but then, there are way too many people who fall into this \"i hate anything that has any sort of following\" category too. it\'s sooo freaking annoying. why can\'t we just see the movie/hear the music/see the show/whatever for ourself before deciding we hate it?
It\'s happened with a lot of stuff. Something gets reaally popular, then suddenly, there forms this group wayy against it. like, BWP, quake, MTV, blah blah blah.
Where was i going with this post? d\'oh! I forget! ah well, screw all of you. BWP was pretty entertaining. The best way to see it was to erase all cynicism in your mind, and just watch. no distractions, just watch the movie. that\'s how it seems intended, and that\'s how it creeped me out. But I think if i had lost the focus, i would not have been able to get much from the movie.

  • #44: Umm... I got kinda carried away there for a while. I can appreciate the people like the movie, sure. I just got a bit ticked off...

Perhaps Clerks is more known in the states, when I mention it to people here in Sweden they mostly look confused. And when I tell them it\'s a black and white movie about some clerks they just shake their heads in disbelief. 8)

Stalker... Man, my bro and I saw that movie when we were like 15 and 14 and there\'s one scene with a bird that flies above a bunch of sanddunes that just stuck. I kept remembering this one scene and when I later found out the name of the movie I just had to get it.

The movie itself quite wierd (starts out B/W but goes to color after a while) and there\'s loooong sessions without any dialog at all. I really like it though. If you find it in your local video rental, give it a shot.

  • #34, uh, If I\'m defending the film, it\'s because I can\'t form an opinion of my own? No, it would be because I DID form an opinion of my own, and I actually liked the movie. Yes, there are people in this world who don\'t agree with you. And as far as the shaky camera goes, that\'s called realism. If someone is running with a camera, it\'s not going to be completely still. Sure there are alot of great movies with special effects, but they are overdone. Seems like almost every major movie made these days has some kind of computer-generated effect. And just because you didn\'t like it doesn\'t mean there isn\'t a plot, because there is. I thought it was a brilliant movie. It was more original than most of the movies that are out right now.

You think Clerks is underrated? I don\'t think so at all. There are ALOT of people who consider that one of the best films of the 90s. And I have heard alot of good things about that movie Stalker. Maybe I\'ll check it out sometime.

#39, of course Fight Club makes you think. That\'s because it was a book originally. If it were written by some big Hollywood studio, it would have been complete crap. I think movies that start out as books, although never as good as the book, are alot better than most other movies.

  • #24: Ehmm... The only moron around here is you, K? You can\'t even get the names straight. I\'m Martin, there\'s one martini and the guy doing updates are Marteen, aka Hexagon. And as other has stated; do I walz into a café where all you \'artsy\' boys and girls sit around contemplating \"why life is such a sad excuse for existence, there has to be something more to it all...\"? Nope. Why? Because I don\'t really care what you think and do and I don\'t wan\'t to hang around peeps like you.

*Most* of the time I enjoy my stay here at the shack and if you don\'t, bugger off back to your room in the attic and keep on taking photos of your left foot and wondering why you haven\'t made it big time yet.

The only ones defending BWP are the ones who are to proud to admit that they\'re wrong or the ones who don\'t have the guts to form an opinion of their own.

I just have to reply to you here as well:
\"Do you know anything about cinema technique\"

Some. Why? Oh, you mean that getting the movie so extremely shakey was actually *hard* to do?

\"or perhaps ANY intellectual thought process?\"

Yeah, I have to think pretty much all the time. Are you trying to cover up the lack of plot in the movie with this one?

\"It\'s not all about escapism with another Schwarzenager or Brad Pitt film.\"

Ok, without commenting the fact that you can\'t spell to Schwarzenegger (damn, just did) I\'m curious to what you mean here... You don\'t go see a movie to get away from your normal life? Fine, either you\'re a fire fighter, fighter pilor or Superman or you actually like boring movies. No problems. You see, I totally think that Aliens (that\'s nr 2 for those of you who can\'t tell them apart) and Terminator 2 are two totally excellent movies and I\'ve seen them 10 times each atleast. I also think that Clerks are a extremely brilliant piece of work and one of the most underrated movies ever. I\'ve also seen Tarkovskys Stalker a number of times and I love that too. But I guess your knowledge of art prevents you from enjoying a movie even though it might have Brad Pitt and \"Schwarzenager\" in it?

    >If that\'s all you want out of life, fine, just don\'t criticise others with higher artistic aspirations.\"

I assume that in this sentence you\'re talking about us here, disliking BWP, first and then yourself later. This means that if all *you* want from your life is hanging out in cafés and art studios, wearing black clothes, quoting Nietsche and \'enjoying\' paintings made out of elephant dung you have no right criticising us who has \'lower artistic aspirations\' (according to your way of thinking).

Bah, why am I wasting time on you? I need to get some work done. But I guess that\'s another concept your not familiar with, eh?

  • #32, Well, the original Star Wars arcade game was based on the movie, and that\'s one of my favorites. But, you are right that the majority of movie-based games are absolute crap. Now I don\'t know if this one will be any different, but I\'m not going to judge it until I\'ve played a demo. It might not even be based on the story from the movie. You could just be a fictional character, that wasn\'t in the movie, that happens to be wandering the forest hunting for the witch by getting past various obstacles. But who knows, I think Nocturne is a good game, so since this is being made by the same company, and using basically the same engine, it could be a really good game. It all depends on who makes it. I noticed that ALOT of movie-based games are made by companies that couldn\'t make a good game even if John Carmack was telling them how to make it.

  • See, in my first post, I said I knew there were a small few games that were good. Dune2 would have to be one of them. And many star wars game blow big time. Well, on star wars games, Id say the ones NOT based on the actual movies are decent (tie fighter, dark forces, jedi knight), anything actually based on the movies is pretty lame.

However, that still leaves the 99.95% of movies that suck when converted.

I\'d also be quick like you are that you can\'t always judge a game like that, but given the past, and the fact that the game makers would have to get it out within the next 12 months to realistically pick up any of the marketting barrage that is going on now, means that it will likely be substantial lame.

And that is the main reason movie games blow, is that they have to be made FAST to be in relative sync with the movie. A game that just based on a movies \"universe\", can take years, such as dark forces, since it isn\'t directly tied with anything.

  • I\'m just saying, that A, No game based on a movie, no matter how good that movie was, has been worth getting. I doubt that a blair witch game would be the one that would break free of that. And B. That from the people I\'ve talked to, and what I have seen, it doesn\'t seem like there would be a game there, well, perhaps some sort of Myst like game, but if that\'s your piece of pie, then eat up.

Do I go to your artsy web pages and go \"You guys are a bunch of weak ass pansy bitches?\", No, since I could give a fuck less if you wallow in your bitchness. Being \"kids\" has nothing to do with anything. Someone saying they dislike a movie, doesn\'t make them wrong, or you right, since damn, those are opinions.

As far as BWP goes, everything I\'ve read, and everyone I know who has seen it, says it blows, that the concept, on paper is Ok, but they blew it. I\'ll probably end up renting it anyways, to see for myself.

  • CHUD: It\'s all good... I\'m just sayin\' it would suck if you ended up not liking it, even after defending it, im not bashin ya man.
BUT, the reasons I didnt like Blair Witch is I felt robbed, (even though I downloaded the movie) It just sucked, cuz I was nearly convinced that all this shit was real, then when I found out it was all faked, I felt kind of robbed, like it took away the magic. It WAS a clever movie, and fun to watch the 3 times I did before I found out the truth... gah.. I guess im just bitter, but if you like it, hey, im not bashing your tastes, I like Return of the Jedi, not many starwars fans like it, but I could care less :)
    Its all opinions.
