by Steve Gibson, Jan 16, 2003 3:43pm PSTWell it appears that some last minute changes have been made, and Valve Software is not releasing the Steam 2.0 / Counter-Strike 1.6 client this evening after all. Obviously there are a number of leaked clients floating around out there although people arent really having much luck with them.
Steam Beta 2.0 Admission Suspended : The Counter-Strike and Team Fortress communities have maxed out the Steam 2.0 beta servers, resulting in the temporarily suspension of admission to the beta as more content servers are put online. The current Steam content servers offer over 500 megabits of bandwidth, all of which the community is consuming right now. Anyone interested in hosting a Steam content server should email biz@steampowered.com. (Content server requirements can be found at www.steampowered.com Those who have already joined the beta are encouraged to continue their participation and submit their feedback.The file was never even made official and we were never given the green light to put the client out on Fileshack, you can thank the gaming press for leaking it out early. I suppose if just a leak was enough to max out the servers, an actual official release would have just been ugly.

* start - run - type "msconfig" (without the "")
* go to the Startup tab
* disable steam by removing the V in the startup item collumn
* reboot

i installed steam but nowhere did i see an option that let me "update" anything...

So I spent a few minutes finding a server that wasnt full and joined it. Played HAVANA for about 10 minutes, looks nice.
So if you happen to be lucky enough to have 1.6b, you can now play with others.

Steam is in beta. This means it will have problems, it's being tested and updated and worked on for your ultimate benefit. The whole point of steam is content delivery that will help you guys from having to mess about with finding patches and updates, raping websites of bandwidth. You have to consider such a large volume of CS players will obviously put a big strain on things and will lead to problems, but that will all be fixed in due time. If you recall this is nothing new. Every CS release causes such a massive demand for bandwidth that sites go down. It's foolish to think one system will have no problems dealing with it.

What's worse is you're probably one of those people who play CS for 5 hours a day in the solid belief it's the holy gaming bible that cannot be changed in any way without your express permission. I've updated my deviantOne script for CS to work with the 1.6 Beta. First off, the script lets you buy weapon and equipment kits. When you buy a primary kit, you get the gun, then the best armor money allows, followed by ammo, and a defuse kit for CT. Pistol kits come just with ammo. Also some equipment items have been combined into short commands. While you can bind the keys yourself as you wish, I've included quick commands to bind the kits to F1-F12, and a few other keys.
Also some actions such as quick knife, toggle primary/pistol, turn 180 (havent checked if this works in 1.6 actually), browse grenades up/dn, and burst fire are included.
SETUP:
(1) Download: http://esky.dodhq.net/ezcs/devOne11.zip
(2) Unzip to your Steam folder, i.e. C:\Games\Steam
(3) In the game console type HELP for command info

Steam did not ask if i wanted it to autostart.
Steam is not running from the startup folder so i guess it's in the registry.

but after another min or so, the game launched, i suppose from the first try, when I got no error... so it's slow as shit... but a hint that its working, if the cancel button on 'preparing to launch' fades to unclickable, that means its working... but it actually takes minutes... now i clicked to create my own game server within the CS menu, and its downloading content of fileshack... i guess server hosting content, but no time estimate, just two progress bars so far, and i alt tabbed now i cant get it to restore.. i assume once it's done dloading i'll be able to restore...

just wondering if anyone has any success? and if so, any work arounds?
I've got all the files downloaded..but when I try to connect to a server, or start the game on my own, I get this error...
STEAM VFS failed to initialize: SteamStartup(Oxf,0x13f268) failed with error 41: User's ticket has expired
they'll wake up and just let us d/l the 1.6 patch.
4 megs? sounds like 1.6 is just to get Valve's steam [up your ass] on your computer.

valve dropped the ball...so what that it was free or a beta in the first place...thats besides the point...they hyped up the community with press releases and screen shots of something new in CS...of course everyone and their sisters uncle is gonna wanna download it...now all the sudden they cant and bitching starts...its just a natural progression of events when people are told they are gonna get something and they dont...free or not...so bitch some more

that said onto the good things (because the bad things are obvious and have been said before i did)
steam 2.0 interface is pretty nice, the game booting up at game resolution is nifty. i like the new console but its missing the up arrow for previous command, other than that the console is pretty damn cool. friends seems usable since it pops up when you bring up the console and doesn't take over your F1 and F2 keys, so i suppose i will probably actually use that feature now.
