Halo POV

by Maarten Goldstein, Oct 28, 1999 6:22pm PDT

Voodoo Extreme has an email up that one of their readers got from Bungie's Allan Turner on why Halo is a 3rd person game:

>>Why is the game HALO a 3rd person view only? please give one good reason. PLEASE MAKE IT A FIRST PERSON VIEW!!! we don't like tomb raider controls. thanks.

Because for the level of environmental control and interaction you'll need int he game. It is nothing like Tomb Raider so please don't judge camera controls you've never experienced or used until you use them. The things you can do with the camera and the POVs that can be obtained are what makes this gmae what it is. If you want and like Quake 3 then I'm happy for you but that's not our game. Our game is Halo and it has a camera control that you have to expereince before you love or hate it.
You didn't miss that new screenshot yesterday, did you?

  • Man Halo is building one hell of a hype machine. ItÂ’s going to be really damn difficult for Bungie to live up to our sky high expectations IÂ’m wondering if showing it so early in itÂ’s development wasnÂ’t a bad idea. From what IÂ’ve been able to understand from the dozens of articles IÂ’ve read about it, the game is at least a year from it initial predicted release. And considering how difficult it is to pinpoint when a software product will be completed, it will probably take one and a half times that long.

I guess IÂ’ll have to play something else in the meantime.

  • what a bummer, how did i miss that? sheesh, i wanted to fly this spacecraft, i wanted to drive that badass jeep and look up to see my teamates wailing away on that 50 cal. as the shells bounced all over the dash. I wanted to \'feel\' the effects of thier real time character physics, not watch it from a distance. instead i have to watch my third person character experiance what i should be seeing. taking bumps and hills in that eep will just be eye candy, not reuiring any al driving skills. and GODDAMIT don\'t you hate it when he batteries in your wieless keyboar start to fade?!?! mf\'er

  • third person does not necessarily mean that a crosshair is not possible. all a crosshair is is a 2d indicator that shows where your shot is going to hit. there\'s no reason why this wouldn\'t work in a 3rd person game.

and, using heretic 2 as an example (because it\'s really the only one we\'ve got, of a good 3rd person action game) it was nest to impossible to aim in 1st person mode, and very easy to aim in 3rd.

i read somewhere else today where somebody said that 3rd person is not realistic, because who walks around viewing themself from behind all day. first of all, if i wanted real life, why would i play a game to begin with? and secondly, last I checked, nobody walks around with a gun strapped to their right cheekbone either.
